I’m sure this is a newby question for sure, on my 2022 2301 every time I start it, I get a puff of black smoke is the normal for diesel tractors

if you 'preheat' for 5 steamboats , it probably won't 'puff black'.

Ok sounds like I’m not letting the glow plug get hot enough, it’s my first diesel I just assumed after first start she was good to go

I get a brief puff of black smoke. Always have. Maybe a second or less.

Now, after first start - what time has passed? If you are running around and then go inside and get something and get back on - no glow is needed. I would say if it has sat for more than 15-20 minutes I would glow the plugs again.

The colder it is - the longer you need to glow - in fall, winter - I would glow for a least 10 seconds - getting the chamber warm is the best thing you can do for a diesel to start well.

Same with mine. Also get the puff when engaging the PTO on the mower.
