How to store a large Auger for easy attachment?

So, my 18" auger was just dropped off - haven't even unpacked it yet. It weighs about 80lbs - 50 more than my doctor wants me to lift. I made an easy storage unit for hanging the phd but nothing for the augers. Up till now I just store the 9" and 12" on pallets off the ground. This isn't going to work for the new one - too heavy for me to muscle around.

Does anyone have a way to store heavy augers for easy attachment / unattachment? I am thinking of some kind of tall wooden box, open at one side and the top, so I can back up to it. It would need to have horizontal ground attachments to be stable. . .

Am I overthinking this? Is there anything simpler?

I usually just lay my augers down but I'd also be interested in seeing how people store theirs.

DustyRusty can you post a pic? That sounds like a doable solution without wasting a lot of good lumber.

Search for 'outdoor golf club storage' to get some ideas.

Maybe something like this with a bungee cord/chain at the top to keep the auger from falling over.

I have a lot of 55 gallon metal drums, so I cut the tops off of them and store the augers in the drums upright. I can then just back the tractor up and lower the boom down and attached one. I have from 6" all the way up to 24". The 24" wont fit in a drum so I just lay that on a pallet. I know not what you are looking for but a drum would handle the 18" no problem. and a few smaller can go in another drum.

I copied this from Tractor Mike for the entire PHD, but it might work better for just the auger.

It worked "just ok" for a while.

My version needed to reinforce/gusset the corners because when I set the entire PHD in it with a smaller 8" auger, it leaned so far over that it "bent the stand" and then it would not accept the 12" auger anymore.

I did not find it to be an "elegant solution" and I ended up cutting it apart.

I store mine in pieces on a pallet. I assemble the parts onto my machine. The only "heavy" part is the gear box.

You could drill some holes in the ground, line with sonotubes, toss a shovel of clear gravel in the bottom.
Toss a tarp over them or build a movable roofed structure.

Then I read GreensvilleJay's post - That may be the winner Easy enough to drill the correct size holes, just have to find a suitable liner.

The ones I've bought are 'waxy'. 3 that I pulled out after 22 years in the ground were fine.
You could use sections of water service/ sewer drain installs. Ask nice at a subdivision build, get them for free.BTDT.

I could build something like that for under $100 ... ridiculous price on that thing.

I have a SSQA compatible auger that's currently in the ground. It's dry up here so I wasn't too worried about leaving the auger in the dirt. I really should make something and perhaps I'll cut up or modify the boat engine stand that I cobbled together ... after I make a smaller, more compact stand.
