The price was right is all I know…I hope to redo a deck this summer, and if so I hope to repurpose some of the old boards to fill in some of the gaps in the pallets at the compost station….i lose a little through all the gaps. I made another batch of lasagna with grass clippings today and your rake hack had me giggling (haven’t lost the rake yet)…it’s not the LR that Skeet’s might be dreaming of when he closes his eyes but the MLR still works.

There’s an “upper class” feed-store just west of Austin which caters to all the California-escapees moving into the area. They have large stacks of pristine pallets sitting out in their parking lot…. and, not wanting to get in-trouble…but wanting a few pallets to store stuff on (and replace the old one used to keep the dog-house off the ground) … I called them to see if I could ”steal one or two after-dark..?? “

The owner seemed puzzled at first…then said, “Help yourself!”

I find good use for them all the time….It never occurred to me that wood pallets might be a burden to a business-owner.

I can't understand why 'plastic' pallets aren't required by law. I could pickup 100s of new skids EVERY day around here, keep thinking about buying an outdoor wood burning boiler as the fuel wood be free.
Seems to be a HUGE waste of trees..tuning them into ONE use skids.

I’ve thought the Same Thing! Recycled PLASTIC should be a LAW!

Where I worked, we would buy 100 used pallets at a time, probably twice a year. We used them to ship equipment and materials from our shop to the field. I think when I retired a couple years ago we were paying $4.50 each.

I did work at a pharmaceutical plant in the early 2000's and no wood was allowed in the manufacturing building. They didn't even allow wood handles on hammers. Anything that came into their receiving dept. on wood pallets was immediately transferred to plastic pallets.

The solution isn't plastic pallets. The reason warehouses dispose of pallets is because it's cheaper to build new ones than shipping empty pallets to where they can be used. As it stands pallets that aren't burned or otherwise recycled are buried where they rot without causing environmental problems. What could they do with surplus plastic pallets?

I know,I know they could create jobs by shipping empty pallets but some people would rather have a "stemless" check than a job.

use once, then throw away.
Still 'upset' over lack of recycling though.

Funny though, guy asked me about a skid-saw today ! Seems someone makes a saw where you turn skid (pallet) upside down and cut the nail , freeing the '1by4 planks from the 2by4 rails......

Man I dont know where you guys are, but around here nobody gives them away, wally world Sam's food stores, any place that moves lots of stuff,, there is a company that picks them all up even the busted up ones. I dont know if they are recycled to be used again or what

Not usually free near me…I think it is a combination of liabity if someone hurts themself taking them and that they can sell them…there are places around us that take them to turn them into mulch.

It wouldn't surprise me if to please corporate lawyers they pay to have them removed because giving them away exposes them to liability.

When ours reached the end of their useful life they were tossed in the wood dumpster. Skids are bulky so we had some of the laborers rip them apart when things were slow with a couple DIY prybars I had made.

We also disposed of lots of large wooden cable reels. We whacked the centers out and rolled the ends into the wood dumpster. Wood could contain fasteners up to 1/2" in diameter.

Wood and general trash dumpsters were 40CY and our outside metal dumpsters for steel were 30CY. We had smaller indoor dumpsters for aluminum and stainless. IIRC trash was something like $150/pull + $50 a ton. We were paid for metal. Wood was so many dollars a pull, no charge for weight. We briefly had a paper & cardboard dumpster that we were paid for but the recycler stopped that.

I use a skilsaw with carbide blade to cut them up.4 cuts remove the 1by4s, then 3 cuts each for the 2by4s. Takes maybe 5 minutes per pallet.

In my experience any landscape rake is going to damage to the turf no mater how skillful the operator. While I agree with others that the trimming are good for the grass, but only if in limited quantity. If it does begin to build a thatch, I've found that a Pine Straw rake does a pretty good job of dethatching with minimal impact to the grass. Bonus is they are not terribly expensive.

I bought that same rake a couple years ago for $179 delivered but now they are 3x that . Works good for some things but really without pine trees I feel it was a waste of money. Especially at today's prices. I just got done collecting about 10 cu yards of overgrown grass with my cyclone rake and am mulching the garden.

I use one of these around my fenced off 'yard area' about 2.5 acres behind my SxS and it works great. Lawn Sweeper Ive run it around my pastures some and it works but have to dump it a lot...

I've wondered about those for Oak leaves in the Fall. I presently use a bagger on a push mower but that has become more than my age wants to do. I figured a sweeper would have to be dumped so often that could turn into a chore. I'm piggy banking for a towable vacuum/mulcher.

I bought one of these last month. Since my yard is not level, it tears into the soil. I attached a screen to help with collection but being on uneven ground, can’t use it. On the hunt for some kind of wheel kit to keep the tines level as I drive.
