I've read some of the posts about replacing the muffler, thanks for the great information. In my case it's a little more extensive, at least the damages are. Initially it seemed to be moving too much and was resting on the left side on the trim, which melted. I was able to raise it up and wire it back where it seemed correct. That was two months ago. Yesterday after a long day of mowing I found it had melted two holes in the plastic mesh on the right side. I'm not sure how or why it did. So beyond simply replacing the muffler I want to make sure there isn't something else happening that needs to be fixed so it doesn't happen again.

I replaced the muffler on my BX2200 last year. Inexpensive and a pretty easy job. Biggest pain was getting the bolt holes to line up right. Mine were off just enough to fight me. Possibly a higher quality muffle would not have the issue. I just got mine cheap off amazon.

Thanks for the encourging words. I've been pricing them. My biggest concern is figuring out why it started melting on the right side. It doesn't look like any of the brackets are broken.

I'd like to post photos, but I guess I have to post several times before I'm allowed to. Hopefully that includes replies on my post. The headlight cover also melted enough that it won't fit back into place. I was mowing for a couple of hours, is that too much running time in hot weather?

Not sure on that one. I took my engine cover off years ago to do some work and never put it back on .

Do you mean the right side while sitting in the seat? If so, my muffler broke where the pipe on the right/passenger side went in to the muffler. A combination of rust and vibration. If yours is broke there, then perhaps the hot exhaust gas is blowing out on that side and hitting the plastic.

I wish I had a better pic for you. The exhaust manifold pipe bolts to the right side of the muffler. If your muffler was sagging on the left as you stated, then it is not being supported correctly where the manifold bolts in to it on the right side. I would bet there is an exhaust leak there that is now bad enough it is melting the plastic

Thanks, that makes a lot of sense. The exhaust leak. That's the only way I can think of for it to get that hot. And yes, right side from the seat - passenger side if you will.
