Looking to add a 7ft sickle bar mower to keep field hay cut and store for ourselves.

does the l2501 have enough power to work this thing successfully? I assume I would be moving a little slower giving im on the low end of HP.

I dont think I want the sickle bar riding the ground like it typically is shown doing, I would mount a wheel or something on the end

Looking at the pictures you posted, the cutter bar looks bent where it was welded up. I would not buy it. Bent cutter bar will not work well and will be very hard to remove the sickle bar, plus the sickle bar will not move very easily. I would keep looking for another mower. Yes your tractor will run one, because they don’t take much power to run.

Yes more than enough HP. Ontario MTO (highway guys...) used '25HP' tractors with sickle bars to cut in the 50's. Left side tires were 'taller' to make tractor safe on the slopes of the ditches. Yeah looked 'funny' on level ground but SAFE on the slopes

I'd have to see it work with that bent bar before I'd buy it. I doubt it would work well at all. And even then, I'd probably pass on it.

My Dad had a 7' sickle bar mower that he used with a John Deere model B.

hmm, looked at pix(well, copied then ZOOOOMED up...) . IF you get it for scrap price, say $100-200 AND you proper;y repair it, it'd be a 'good deal'.
Obviously sat outside rusting away. Maybe the bend is less due to camera angle ?
I don't know IF you could add a wheel at the end, seems like a bad idea though maybe check online to see if anyone offered it as an option ?

Thanks for the replies, i was going to reweld the patch and make it “straighter” if purchased but they sold this morning so theres that too, oh well. I work machinery repair so have access to a lot of steel and

Found an interesting Kubota 11503 side mount sickle bar attachment for sale as well, but cant find a dang thing for it online other than a manual for sale on ebay. Kubota dealer says never heard of thay before. Not sure about this either considering rarity.

appreciate the feedback though, I keep browsing and will return

Might keep an eye open for a mower with trail wheels. Then the tractor is only powering the gearbox (PTO) and dragging the mower. JD models 37, 38 and 39 had one trail wheel.

Are you baling the hay field after you cut it??
If not, you would be much better off using a flail mower to maintain it. ;)

A sickle bar mower is not made to cut slowly. You need to be moving forward fast enough to make the grass drop behind the cutter bar. Otherwise you’ll be on and off the tractor to clean out the cutter as it gets clogged up.

Update to all I got ahold of a dearborn sickle mower in good shape which is just about ready to roll with, got w pto shaft reducer coming to mate it. Need to get creative with that breakaway bar though since I doubt tractor has a mounting spot for it. I havent had a chance to look underside of tractor yet to see my challenge.

off top of my head im thinking make a fabricated bracket thatll come from underside tractor and mount onto lower linkage arm.
