... sells a microexcavator ?
$9999, 14HP gas, cute little thing. Obviously 'light' on the specs but yeesh, there's a LOT of parts to it !

Probably the same or similar, that Andrew Camarata recently bought and demonstrated.
He paid $4,000 USD.

Are they throw-away excavators? Dig one hole, then throw it away because there are no service parts to fix it?

Would have to contact the Cdn rep for parts info. I KNOW one of them is cheaper than buying the needed parts to fix a KX-41 that has 'minor' issues.
As long as you don' t ABUSE the little machine,it'd stand up. Hay, it's made in the country that has the highest bridges in the world. Saw the 'impossible engineering' program last night.... 1600' to the water, mile long...

Will the bridge stay up if a container ship collides with its base? :)

..especially a container-ship full…carrying Chineese excavators…?

Alibaba offers free shipping on a $2K excavator…. I’d offer a link…but …No… I won’t…

It is likely that NO bridge support pier could withstand a direct hit at 8+ knots,...... from a loaded, nearly 1,000' ship.

so Dali only had 1/2 the seacans on it could carry but, humour me, WHERE would the other 5,000 seacans be put ???
some math guy can figure out the force of 95,000t vessel + cargo doing 8 knots to see how much concrete would be needed to make the safety bullard.

YES, I've taken unused items back 3-4 YEARS and received store credits or cash as well as replacements for busted stuff only 3-9 months old.

From the pictures, it does appear that this issue was not about a bollard.
The 4 bollards pictured (there were not enough) were not properly spaced to protect the bridge piers.
It was a bridge pier, that was hit.

but,but,but... the expert that CNN had on SWORE that bridge wasn't designed right ! Said it should have withstood being RAMMED , even though 50 YEARS ago the DALI or ANY like her were on the 7 seas......

yeesh...

it would be nice to 'see the numbers' though of how BIG a volume of concrete would be needed to STOP that ship.

On a 'maritime forum' guys are asking why tugs weren't used as 'escorts',something that's required at other ports of call......?

Still, I suspect 3 months before the main channel is opened, providing they work 24/7....

Stiffness attracts load. You couldn’t reasonably put a “strong/stiff” reinforced concrete structure in place to accept the load. A proper fender system would be flexible and probably sustain a significant amount of damage itself and be designed to deflect the load vs take it all on the chin. Something like very large interlocked sheet pile cells filled with dredged material.

But then one would have a whole new scour concern of epic proportions.

A little like this.

Funny thing about folks saying it wasn’t designed correctly. They obviously have no idea what the AASHTO standards for highway bridge design call for relative to vessel impact. It. sure as hell isn’t this situation.
