Grapple Grappling

Need experience/opinions.
I'm thinking about buying a LandPride SGC0660 grapple for my L35. My local dealer has one for $2,500 which seems to be about the going price. He also has an SGC1060 ($4,000), Darrell Harp 60" ($2,500) and Bad Boy 60"? ($?). I've also considered the Titan 60", on sale now for about $2,500.

The Titan has greasable bushings at the main pivot and rod ends but is made of regular grade plate, and I can't see and touch it before delivery, so I've ruled it out. (There is/was one not too far away, if someone highly recommends it.)

The Bad Boy is probably the cheapest, but it looks pretty flimsy, so I previously ruled it out.

The Darrell Harp looks pretty sturdy, can't remember if it's AR400, but it pivots on tabs and a bolt. I think that would need repair/modification pretty quickly.

The 0660 seems pretty light, but it is AR400/450. The main pivots have bushings with zerks, but not the rod ends.

What do you guys think?

Well...not much h help but, you can buy drilled bolts for The 0660 and install the zerks yourself.

Of all the choices you gave the SGC1060 is one of the best, but your paying for it.
If you only need to light weight work the SGC0660 would work.
I'm not a fan of under rated grapples, a bent tweaked, twisted, broke grapple is a waste of money.

My experience is limited but the one thing I would say is style of grapple is way more importsnt than any of those things.

I have an MTL root grspple, probably made out of grade 50 steel, and I could not bend or break it with my L3901 if I tried.

I've had an MTL for 5 years and used on my L4240. I've moved a lot of limbs and brush and off loaded many cord of firewood. This tractor isn't going to hurt this grapple!

Bought 9-12-18, 60" root grapple, twin cylinder... $1,048 including delivery.

Good day.

I have a LP 0660 that I bought originally when I had a BX. I think it is about the right size/wt to use with my current B. I have used with my MX but it is not meant for a machine that size. It’s just my opinion but I think for an L35, that is more of a much heavier duty / construction type machine that depending on what using for I would look for something heavier than the 0660…just my opinion. I added an EA last fall for my MX….i wanted a long bottom style…and LP was out of their mind on pricing for the long bottom style. I think they (LP) had a great product, but there was a miscommunication on the value / Karat wt of the plating(paint). If I wanted a heavier clam shell style I would have considered LP (that style did not seem so expensive relative to the long bottom they had).

Regarding EA, had they not been still shipping product then, I would have gone with MTL long bottom style. MTL was a heavier built grapple IMO but I did not want to take up that much of my lift capacity. I recommend consider the MTL as others above mentioned. They were very responsive and very helpful in my emails / calls with them. I don’t have direct product/purchase experience with them but I think they are worth a consideration. MTL had a variety of models/options to choose from and different weights between them…depending on how you want to use / how heavy you want they have some options. Happy shopping.

I would have bought a Landpride unit but they were back ordered over 8 months. I ended up fabbing my own because it was faster and I was tired of fixing my old root grapple POS like your LP one.

I find it interesting the differences in perception on a piece of equipment.
I have dug out thousand's of dead and dying scot pines , moved some rock and as of yet not bent a tine or have had a problem with my LP SGC0660.

As far as no grease zirks on the rod end pivots I should be so lucky to live long enough to wear them out!

Granted my tractor does not have the weight and digging forces as your L35 and I do not test my grapples like a certain guy on Youtube would do!

I’ve beat the crap out of my LP 0660 on my B2650. Other than paint wear, it’s still great. I grease where the grease goes and keep on truckin’. I don’t think the B2650 has enough nuts to hurt the 0660…

So far, it’s still my favorite tool and everyone should own one.

My LP SG 54 has served me well for more than 3 years. I have: pulled up and moved large rocks, moved small telephone poles/piles and piles and piles of 2-5 inch privet hedge and moved and dumped into dumpsters an old hog parlor (beams, posts, metal roof and rafters) that I tore down. I just finished clawing down and tearing out a band of 5 foot high multiflora rose/brambles/vines that was 15 yards deep and 75 yards long. The multiflora rose was so thick that I could not back my rotary cutter into it. Afterwards, I cut up all of the piles and remaining stems with my rotary cutter.

My grapple has no damage.

Which tractor do you use it with?

I have a L2501 with filled tires. As it sits with loader about 4200 lbs I would guess.

To be fair I tend to be pretty much in tune with the stresses and techniques operating the grapple and my soil is sandy. I am not suggesting that with your much heavier L35 you could not bend and tweak the SGC0606 but I am making the point that my grapple is not sub-par quality and or poorly designed.

One of the larger living red pines I pulled out when I cleared the spot for my tractor shed. It was about 9 inches at the base and I did break off the trunk with the tractor and grapple.

Maxed out B2650 FEL lift capacity

Had a dead tree at the top of the driveway hillside. Dropped it before it fell in the driveway. Used 2 snatch blocks, 200+ feet of wire cable to increase tractors pulling power 3X. Saved 2 logs for lumber logs. B2650, LA534 loader and LP0660 grapple. FEL could not lift it. Curled grapple down...

I have the LP, they say A400 steel though I dont know,,, the bolts in the hinges have been drilled out and cross drilled and a fitting screwed in, I doubt they would ever wear much with normal use anyways but then what do I know,, and yeah if you dont have abent time well you know

I have a 72in LP root grapple, yes it has AR400 on the teeth portion. I have put close to 200 hours on it just with a rental 100hp Cat D3. Probably another 500 hours on my equipment. I ran that grapple hard behind that D3 machine, it took everything I fed it. Occasionally a tooth does get bent, if I can't sledge hammer them out straight, I'll heat it up a bit then that usually does the trick.
