I have a L2501 with a third function kit. I would like to operate a log splitter with the third function. Has anyone tried this? Any suggestions? My tractor does not have rear remotes.

Not the easiest or best way to do that. Here is my suggestion:
Put a quick coupler on the T port of the third function valve. When you want to use the log splitter:
TURN THE TRACTOR OFF
Disconnect that coupler and connect the log splitter supply hose to the T port on the third function valve.
Connect the log splitter tank hose to the third function tank hose.
Start the tractor and start splitting
When ready to disconnect the log splitter
TURN THE TRACTOR OFF
Disconnect both log splitter hoses and reconnect 3rd function hose
Start the tractor and proceed as usual.
Now prepare yourself for an avalanche of people telling you the log splitter wont work well, you will wear your tractor out, its a horrible idea, yadda yadda....

A picture is worth a bunch of cell phone mangled words. Here is my old log splitter hookup - power beyond hose on loader valve. Just be sure to turn the engine off when connecting and disconnecting it.

You'd be better in all ways by getting a self-propelled log splitter. Move logs with your tractor to the splitter. The log splitter can be moved by your tractor, truck or ATV. And park it. Fire it up as needed. Move logs with your tractor. Your tractor will not be frozen in place powering the splitter.

There is so much more you could use the tractor for than as a log splitter! With the sentimental value maybe you could convert it into a stand alone with a motor and hydraulics, the tractor could bring over the logs for splitting, pull a trailer to move the split logs, etc. I use it to lift heavy logs onto the beam to split. I just couldn't sacrifice the use of the tractor to use it as a splitter.

I’m in the camp of self contained splitter too.
*So what if it’s one more motor to maintain, if you can’t afford a quart of oil to change it every year or so, you can’t afford the diesel to run the tractor to power one.*
I get that it was your pops and you want to keep it around, and by all means, do. But for practical purposes, self contained is superior.
*Not a jab at you personally, but I’ve seen that argument on here a lot.

Upgrade your father's log splitter to be a 'standalone'. That way you'll have his splitter and 'smile from above' when he see you've improved his work !
I appreciate the use of a tractor loader as a wheel-barrow. Wife and I are hosting a large “solar eclipse” party at our place and we pulled a dump trailer down to San Antonio last Friday to a “scratch and dent” appliance outlet and bought two more freezers and a commercial ice-maker to accommodate the numbers of airplanes and RVs that will camp out all weekend on our place.
The challenge was today…to unload those appliances ..two upright deep freezers and a commercial ice maker….off the dump trailer and get them into the hangar and garage/game-room by myself.
I grabbed my appliance dolly…and realized how ridiculous it was going to be to get them down off that trailer onto the concrete…. Then I realized the solution!
Put the pallet forks on the loader and a 4’x4’ piece of plywood across the forks…. raised the loader and placed the plywood onto the floor of the trailer… used the dolly to move the appliances onto the plywood….. raised the forks off the trailer-floor…backed the tractor away from the trailer…and turned it around and drove it into the bldgs using the tractor like a fork-lift.

Look at the size of the valve & hoses for your 3rd function. Look a the size of the hoses on your splitter. Could it be made to work? Probably. Problem is, the 3rd function system wasn't designed to run a 4" cylinder. It could work, but be terribly slow. I side with the folks who recommend converting the splitter to a stand-alone unit.

I try to remember to toss 2 skids into the pickup before I go 'out and about'. That way when I see something that says 'looking for good home', I can toss it onto the skids. It makes it EASY then to unload,toss forks onto tractor,snag the skid and unload. Kinda funny that while there's always someone to load, I'm the ONLY one here to unload...hmmmm
I agree convert it. Look for sale on HF 212cc motor and hydraulic pump. Tractor is more useful moving the logs and cut wood. Good luck
I understand how you feel about keeping something Pap built, though I wonder if your machine has enough flow or pressure to run it efficiently. Something you may think about is a hydro pump on the PTO and run a closed system. That way you dont have to worry about the tractor, and you can run it from any PTO,, just a thought

I have a 3pt log splitter running off remote outlets on an L3901. Its equipped with a regen valve and has a 14 second cycle time. Fast enough I can't keep up with it.
