I don't worry too much about this.

If I go to look at something, I take what I need to take it home. If I decide not to buy it, no harm done. If I want to buy it I don't have to drive another 8 hours.

People believe what you say. Even if you have a trailer with you, if you say "that thing there I'm not happy with, not gonna buy it" then they believe you. Or if you say "no, that price is too high, not gonna buy it", they also believe you.
Maybe. Had a guy drive 3 hours to buy some ATVs from me. He had the rig to take them back. He started making noise about the lack of a title for one of them and wanted to talk the price down from what he’d agreed to. I told him he didn’t make a 6 hour trip to leave empty handed. He paid the price he’d agreed to previously and loaded them up. As the seller, I knew he wasn’t going to leave without them after that drive and having the rig to pick them up then and there. Plus I didn’t care much either way, there were a handful of folks waiting for me to tell them if the sale failed. Different tactics for different situations I suppose.

As Grizbota mentioned the grapple is a lighter duty unit. Depending on what you plan to do it may be fine. It’s typically for a smaller machine. You may end up wanting to sell or replace with something more rugged. I have that same grapple and I used it with my previous BX and my current B. I have even used it with my MX, once and in a pinch…I would not plan to do that regularly…in my opinion it is not designed for a larger L like you are considering or MX. it will work fine but you may want something heavier for your L. See the spec sheets below. I think you found a good deal regardless whether the grapple is lighter duty or not. You could easily sell that and replace with something heavier if you needed too. Looks like a great find. Good luck.

Yes I plan to use the grapple extensively. I have about 40 acres of timber that I am improving. Lots of brush to remove and downed trees to stack. I will also use it to brush hog another 40 acres and move large round bales. L4701 is big enough to move the hay bales and run my 6 foot hog but is small enough to maneuver through my timber.

I am paying my neighbor to haul it home once if I pull the trigger.

I did request more close up pictures of the tractor including the oil filters. If they look original I will probably walk away.

New unit without grapple and 3rd function is just under 40K.
Thank you for your reply.
$11,500 less than new, ( + grapple + 3rd Function....= $4 K ) , and 350 hours?
I would absolutely NOT.... "walk away"!

I would put down a big (refundable) deposit, and attempt to make sale contingent on acceptable oil sample results!
No contingency possible......?
I would buy it anyway!

Well I was going to make the purchase thus week but 7 to 10 inches of snow expected tonight threw a wrench in my plans. Hopefully someone wont beat me to it. I appreciate everyones advice. Here is sticker seller sent me. I think there should be a longer serial number stamped on the tractor, correct?

Nope. 5 digits is all. You can research Kubota serial numbers on line. IIRC, the engine and frame serial numbers are different as are the attachments. The engine serial number can be tied to a production date (sort of, IIRC)

A FEL with a QASS and bucket will have three different detail numbers, one on each component.

If I recall correctly.

That 5 digit frame serial number won’t do too much for you, unless maybe a dealer can track it.

The 7 digit engine serial number seems to be the one that can be researched online.

Here’s a link. Kubota Engine Serial Numbers

Here’s a better link. June of 2017, between the 10,000th and 19998th units. I “think” it’d be the 17940th unit built, but I’m not quite sure how to use that chart.

All, well still have not had a chance to make the purchase, 23 inches of snow here and -30. In the mean time found a 2009 Kubota MX4700 HST with 170hrs. FEL, no 3rd function. Stored inside. Looks in great condition. Wondering if anyone would have experience or advice on MX 4700? Compared to L4701? THANKS this is a great group!

No 3rd fuction on the MX. Would have to install 3rd and purchase a grapple.

The GREAT bonus of the 2009 MX4700, over the L4701, is that the MX4700 does NOT have any EPA mandated anti pollution junk!

Thats what I was thinking 1 plus. Just starting to research the MX compared to the L4701. Kinda question 170 hrs on a 2009. Is the 09 MX series the same as the current MX series?

I cannot answer your MX questions, as I am not familiar with the MX series.
I will tell you that a 2009 machine with 170 hours, can be believable.
I bought my 2006 L48 TLB in 2019, with 251.1 hours, (13 years old) from the original owner!

I have a MX6000. I looked at the specs for the MX4700 and they are similar to my tractor but slightly different. The major difference in the older MX tractors is they have the LA844 loader and the newer models have the LA1065 loaders, which are quite a bit heavier with more lift capacity. Now, compared to the L4701, the MX is generally more robust with a category 1/2 hitch and the L series has the category 1 hitch. They have a slightly longer/wider wheelbase and are heavier with larger diameter front wheels, so they are very stable machines. Depending on your intended usage it’s a significant step up in capability and the category 2 hitch allows for using heavier duty 3ph implements. Both the MX and the L4701 tractors are basic no frills dependable machines. A MX4700 with only 170 hours is a nice find indeed if it’s in good condition.

Thank you. I think I can get it for $15,000. Will add 3rd function, which I think is possible, havent called dealer yet. Also add grapple $3500, fluid in tires. The 2018 L4701 Im looking at has 350 hrs, smaller grapple, fluid, for $28,500. I think the price on the 2009 is the way to go. Little more tractor for less $ ($20k). Any words of wisdom appreciated.

X2 on the above based on my research of the MX series. No worries on the low hours, for some folks, that’s all the need they had. I’d like to think it’s the original owner? If so, they should have maintenance records, which are likely a few engine oil change's and maybe an HST oil and filter change, just based on age.

You didn’t mention price on this unit, so I can’t really give you an overall opinion between the two units you’ve mentioned herein. I’m presuming there’s about a $10k or more delta, in favor of the MX. If so, the MX might be the one. For me, if it was only a $5k delta, I’d make a refundable deposit (better define that in writing) on the L4701 to get the guy to hold it until the snow melts.

Edit. You mentioned the price as $15k while I was typing. Yup, I agree with your logic. Go with the MX and outfit it for $4-5k and you’ve saved about $8k plus the cost of transportation of the L.

Happy tractoring.

I agree as long as the machine is in good condition. If you get a MX, you won’t regret it. It’s a perfect size/weight for many of us with acreage to maintain. And what I like best is the stable feel of this model compared to smaller machines, but it’s still very maneuverable. I recommend at least a 10K dual axle trailer about 18-20’ in length. Your truck can probably handle it, but be sure the trailer has brakes and you will want the correct anti-sway hitch attachment for pulling this with a half ton truck.

"correct anti-sway hitch"........ IMHO is the Equal-i-zer hitch!

I had excellent results with the Equal-i-zer hitch, and my HD 3/4 ton 4x4 Suburban, towing my 14K trailer.
Be aware that SOME weight distribution hitches require disconnect of the weight distribution system to back up.
Those rigs are a major nuisance!

Yeah, I have a 3/4 ton and never needed to bother with those, so I didn’t know what they are called.
