Gear oil that meets AGMA 5EP for blower

I'm having trouble finding the gear oil that meets the AGMA 5EP - SAE 80W90 rating as specified in the manual for my Kubota blower attachment. I bought the thing used, it was sitting outside and I want to change all fluids and do all maintenance on it.

Any tips on where to find this gear oil or an equivalent?

Manual says to drain and replace the gear oil every year. Not knowing the history of this blower, I want to drain and replace.

While it fits the bill, if you use 80/90 gear oil for anything else, use that, one less different oil to stock. YMMV

Old thread, new member. Just wondering if anyone has found this oil in a smaller quantity than 5 gallons? I've got a GR2846A snowblower.

Tractor Supply sells 80W90 gear oil in quarts, gallons, and 5-gals.

Personally, I buy a 5-gal pail… then pour it into a new, plastic, pump-up garden sprayer….and use that (minus the nozzle-tip) to install the amount needed into whatever machine needs it. Makes it very easy to determine the correct amount also due to the sprayer having the sides of the tank calibrated in qts.

(I have a number of machines that use gear oil.)

Hey thanks for answering. I looked at TSC and couldn't find anything with the AGMA 5EP rating though. Seems everywhere has 80w90, but I can't find what Kubota requires.

SEP is an AGMA acronym for Synthetic Extreme Pressure gear oil.

Its the same thing as a synthetic SAE service category GL4 or GL5 gear oil.

Any synthetic SAE 75W90 GL5 gear oil matches that Kubota specification. The key word here is synthetic.

I would prefer to err on the side of caution and only use a GL4 gear oil. Some GL5 gear oils will attack brass gears, and that gearbox is made with all brass gears. If you are going to be doing this outside, then you will need a lot of heat to get the old oil out and warm the new oil to get it to flow into the gearbox. To remove the Allen screws, you might have to heat them enough to break the bond of the Loctite that the manufacturer uses when they are new. Also, buy a good quality Alen wrench that isn't going to mess up the Allen screws. This has been discussed many times on these forums in the past.

You are parroting old internet myths and fear mongering.

The API test for yellow metal corrosion is ASTM D130 which rates oils in four bands of four levels each starting at 1A for least corrosive and ending at 4D for most corrosive.

Modern GL5 formulations use buffered sulfur compounds and are almost all 1A or 1B in that test. They are in essence GL4 (2B or lower) compatible. In fact most of them can even be used in a synchronized manual transmission where there might actually be a concern with the high surface temperatures that the brass synchronizer rings experience. Nothing in that snowblower gearbox is even close.

I ordered 2 gallons from the company listed below on 11/24/2020 as I had no luck finding any close or online order for less than 5 gallons. I found them through Lucas oil conversations. Unfortunately for me the cost of shipping was almost as much as the oil,

OMG….!! CANCEL THAT! WWWAAAAYY too expensive. Get down to your local NAPA or TSC or WALMART even…and buy ordinary 80W90 gear old.

It's ridiculous, no doubt. As much problems as I've had with this kubota, I figured I best follow the manual and they've shipped it apparently. Ugh
