BX2230 not starting

Well, I'm a bit stuck. I have BX2230 with around 300 hours. I have had it for 6 years and never had any issues starting. I left for a week and my wife wanted to mow the lawn. She tried to start the tractor and it would not start. She thought it was the battery but it was actually just in gear. She connected a Li-ion jump starter to the battery which, of course, did not move the tractor into neutral so the tractor did not start. When I got home I tried to start it. After putting it in neutral it cranks just fine but will not start. It just cranks and cranks. A small amount of white smoke comes out of the exhaust but otherwise nothing. I replaced the fuel filter and checked the fuel pump - no issue. The stop solenoid appears to be working fine (flips on when the key is turned off and then de-energizes after a few seconds). Is there anything my wife could have damaged with the li-ion starter? It runs at 14V, which should not be a problem. Maybe just a coincidence that it will not start now? The fuel is new. Any ideas?

The stop solenoid appears to be working fine (flips on when the key is turned off and then de-energizes after a few seconds).
Just to get the thread started, please clarify what appears means.

Did you remove the solenoid and actually watch it move? Or are you going by the sound?

I would remove the solenoid and watch it when I turned the key on and off. Would also try starting the tractor with the stop solenoid hanging in the air and see what happens. BUT if you do this, you may need three hands to hold the solenoid back in place and turn the key on and back off at the same time...to shut the tractor down...or maybe just long arms...LOL

Just a couple thoughts...Lots of expertise here...someone will have better ideas than I do...

Thanks for the suggestion. I can see the solenoid during the start attempts and the key off (it's easily viewable). It does nothing until the key off, then activates for about 5 seconds, then deactivates. I think that's what it's supposed to do.

Does the timer relay do anything except activate that solenoid? Maybe it's damaged? I disconnected the timer relay completely and the tractor did nothing differently (cranked and cranked without starting).

My BX2200 is different. The only way to see what the shut off solenoid is doing is to remove it and watch the armature rod. Maybe yours is different.

I believe what you think is correct. Some tractors have the shut off solenoid activate only on shutdown. Others like my BX2200 have it energized the whole time, and it is de energized when the key is turned off, and a spring pushes the armature to shut the tractor down.

IF you can see and be sure the solenoid is actually moving like it should, then your problem is something else...as long as it is moving as far as it should normally, I suppose...

So it gets back to, removing it and seeing what happens, I think. If it is spring loaded and not retracting enough to let the engine run, removing it might prove this.

Again, I don't have a clue really. Just trying to think logically...On my BX2200 the solenoid is removable with two screws...very easy to do. Nothing beats eliminating possibilities...

Sounds like it’s time to break out the voltmeter. In the meantime try swapping fuse #4 with #2 or 3 since they’re all 15a fuses. If fuse 4 is open you will not get it running.

All the fuses are good. Removing fuse 4 activates the shutoff solenoid.

Just curious does it have glow plugs . Not to sure how cold it's where you are .If its smoking as your turning it over I suspect it's to cold ?? activate the glow plugs first for 10 -15 seconds and see if it starts.
Just asking about the fuel have you actually ran the tractor since refuelling ?? Quite possible water in the fuel you poured in. Just something to check.

It does have glow plugs. I tried heating them. I actually don't think I did start it after refueling. I guess I'll drain the fuel and refill. Seems strange though, the fuel was not old. Thanks for the suggestion.

Does it spin over or struggle? There have been instances where inadequate cranking speed have prevented starting.

It spins strong and fast.

I disconnected the high pressure fuel inlet to one of the cylinders. No fuel comes out when I crank the tractor. Does that mean the high pressure pump is bad? I hope not. That's expensive.

I disconnected the high pressure fuel inlet to one of the cylinders. No fuel comes out when I crank the tractor. Does that mean the high pressure pump is bad? I hope not. That's expensive.
Make sure the fuel shut-off lever is moving completely back to the on position. You can check it by just pulling it with one finger. Sometimes they will hang up midway through their travel. Some units will not fully return with the throttle lever at idle. but will if the throttle lever is pulled down just above idle.

Can you hear the electric lift pump running with the key switch ON, and engine OFF?
Remove the hose from the second fuel filter to the injection pump from the pump, with the key ON, and see if the lift pump is supplying fuel.

Loosen all 3 lines at the injectors, pull the throttle lever down to WOT, and crank the engine over for several seconds. See if you now have any fuel at the ends of the lines.
It's very possible that the barrels in the pump are stuck in the off position.

I took the injector pump off and the shutoff slide on the back was stuck in the off position. Cleaned it up, lubricated it, reinstalled and it started right up. Lots of gunk on the pump. Thanks for all your help.
