Hey guys need some help. Got a good friend who makes his living with his 02 L48 backhoe. This past February broke left side rear axle.

The axle is model specific and has been discontinued. Part is unavailable. I have searched all dealers and tractor salvage yards. Proving to be a hard animal to find. The part can't bè found sò they say. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Ouch, that is a gut punch for sure. One of the downsides of owning older equipment, which ALL of my equipment is. I will keep my eyes open for him.

Anyway to repair the broken one in a good machine shop? Back in the day, that would have been our first fix on the farm. Sounds like it’s worth quite a bit to give it a shot at least.

A picture of the broken part would help us identify a possible solution, as the last member stated there is a possibility of welding, and leave the broken part to be able to work again.

Is the break a "brittle fracture" - flat like broken ice? (closeup pics would be tell a lot) The original axle 32772-27110 looks to have a small keyway in the threads. This link and related thread describes a similar break occuring at that location. On a hardened part, small corners are huge stress raisers and cracks can start there. Sometimes a shock load can break a through-hardened part like a cookie, especially if the part was hardened too much.

The original axle is heat-treated and would be difficult to repair/restore to full strength, but maybe a new axle from another model can be modified to replace it. Several Kubota rear axles in that size range tractor are of similar design - some without a keyway or threads or maybe hardened by a different process.

For example, the T1170-27110 axle from a M59 is possibly similar in critical features - the inner-end splines, outer end stud flange, maybe even the bearing area may be the same. It's pricey at around $1300 but in a good machinists' hands something like this might be a place to start in duplicating a replacement for yours. Need to study the parts lists for mid size L and M models and compare them to the L48. There might even be some older models with candidate axles in salvage yards for cheap.

Searching Messicks's the part number returns several xxxxx-27110 hits - three of them are rear axles. Maybe find a clue there? Best luck - Dick B.
