Hello everyone, I have a B8200 with about 850 hours that is not charging. Based on the age of the machine, I cannot tell whether the dynamo, voltage regulator, etc. is causing the issue. I would like to upgrade to an alternator. Is there a direct bolt-on alternator that uses the existing dynamo mounting bracket or will I have to purchase a new set of brackets as well? I am looking for the best plug-and-play option. My fabricating skills are not the best.

Thank you!

Well, lets start with - do you want to find the problem first? Or just say the heck with it?

I would bet it is NOT the dyno - they are almost bullet proof.

There is a GM 1 wire alternator that was like 80 bucks or less with an self excite circuit built in.

But I bet it will take a wee bit of modification to make it fit perfectly. AND then you will need to wire it back to the proper places.

THIS might bolt on without mods:

Well, I assumed the dynamo would be okay due to the low hours on the meter. I do not know the history of this machine so was the meter replaced in the past and the hours are incorrect? I have no idea. The engine runs strong and doesn't smoke. Not that this would be an indicator of the age. I replaced fuses and looked at wiring. The only thing I have not done yet was tear the dash apart to check the voltage regulator. I will do that but don't know how or what to test for.

there is one i bought off of ebay that i was able to use. its not a direct bolt on as you have to make a new bracket since its thicker thatn the dynamo and it would set against the exhaust manifold. it cost 50 bucks and its internally regulated so got rid of the regulator. works really well at 30 amp.
