Hi, my friend has a B5000 and we want to know if it is big enough to power a topper and if so what size would it take? I guess any topper would make the tractor light on the front end but we can easily add some weight's if needed. It is only for occasional use keeping 5 acres of grazing tidy. Thanks in advance for any advice offered. Andy.

Ok, I will ask, what is a topper to you? I hear topper and think of a cap or shell for the pickup box. Or are you thinking the old English slang for a well-like person? I could see that one if you help others using your friends tractor. But neither will make the front end light.

If I am not mistaken - a "topper" is much like a reel mower here in the US.

Sorry, uk here. Maybe some would call it a brush cutter or hig. We refer to them as pasture toppers for cutting grass, nettles, thistles etc.

Depends on the size(width) of it. The B5000 is 9hp(8hp at PTO) so maybe 3 feet wide as 4 feet the tractor might have trouble getting it up to speed and then you are going to have to go slow. If it is a rotary cutter is it a rough cut(small trees or twigs) or more of a finish cutter? Can you take a picture of it?

What is the width and did you check the PTO length? Ok I googled it and it appears to be 120 cm(4 foot). So it might cut grass if the grass is not to tall, make sure the rear of mower is a little higher than the front. Also read the manual and if it has a slip clutch verify operation.

I suggest that you get something smaller if possible. The 1200 mm (4 foot) probably needs more horsepower than the tractor has. Try to get a 900 mm (3 foot) if that is available.

You may consider a finish mower if the field is smooth and no saplings to mow. That style will provide a better cut but height of cut will be lower than possible with the topper.

The picture was an example of the type of topper. He just wants something to tidy up long grass and the odd patch of weeds. Thanks

Thanks, I'll look for a 3ft.

Since these pto’s engage by the clutch pedal, it is not really an issue of hp to get them started, you just ease into it the same way you would when rolling away from a stop with a truck that was towing something as opposed to empty. Once it is spun up the HP matters, but it only matters to how fast you can go while cutting a certain amount of material. If you are cutting thick grass down by several inches you will likely need to roll pretty slowly with the tractor. If you are cutting only a couple of inches of thinner material you can probably go as fast as is comfortable (which isnt very fast considering that lifting one of those mowers makes the front of these tractors super light.. you may need to consider how you will add weight to the front to retain ‘steering authority’).

So dont worry too much if you cant find a 3ft rotary cutter.. those would be incredibly rare. 4ft is fine as long as the rotation directions match between tractor and implement, and it isnt overbuilt to the point of being so heavy you cant really drive with it.
