2017 BX1870 - Busted off the Hydraulic Oil Filter Stud...:-(

I left connected the Ujoint stub from my mower deck. With the mower deck disconnected,
I accidentally engaged the mower drive, and the Ujoint stub beat the S&*t out of the Hydraulic
oil filter to the point of busting it off. Severing the stud. Solid Aluminum.

Can this be fixed by grinding it off, tapping in, and inserting a new custom stud?

Dayum - that had to make a hellva sound too.

As for grinding and retapping the hole - I think, and maybe I am wrong, that piece IS screwed into the housing itself.

THIS IS NOT the hydraulic filter - rather a oil filter/block connection - HOPEfully this is the same for the hydraulic filter

Since the alternative is to replace the casting. What do you have to lose? Find what thread the filter is and get/make a stud to replace it. A couple of things... 1). Make sure you use a high temp green Loctite for example #609. 2). So that the filter seals and sits flat make sure you drill the hole straight.
3). put a little grease in the hole for the oil flow and also the hole you can see the pressure relief spring in so that the grease catches any metal chips that will come out when you clean off the grease when your done grinding, drilling and tapping.
The threads on that style are cast into the aluminum so if it doesn't work you will need to open your wallet pretty big & far....

It's a risky job to do that, I personally would replace the cover!
If you get any chips in the output you're very likely to destroy the HST and that's a $5K part if I remember right.

You have to be real careful of putting a stud in there as there are passages that are easily blocked

Secondly there is little room under there to drill/tap

thus, I recommend just replacing the cover it's not that hard really

And for the rest of the crowd reading this. Take the shaft off! You wouldn't believe how many times I've seen this and the majority of the time it is out of pure laziness. The shaft comes off of the stub easily. Spray it with WD 40, go grab a glass of tea, by time you get through with your first sip the collar will be freed right up and will basically fall off in your hands if you just reach under there and do it rather than leaving half of the belly mower's shaft attached to the tractor!

I deleted my earlier post after reading it over a few times I've come to the realization that this nipple/ part # is for the engine oil filter. Sorry for steering everyone wrong.
As for seeing the fix it's been a few years ago and I can't seem to find the original post that I had read up on how the person did the repair. Again sorry for my guliability .

Thank you for turning my incident into a learning moment. I'd also like to thank Kubota for their
cost reducing measures, as well as the engineer who designed the engine with the Fragile oil filter fully exposed.

I would try and repair via a new threaded section. However, I'd only do it with the cover removed. Worse case here is you still have to pony up for a new cover. Best case is a $20 part and if you want, another $20 to a machine shop to tap and install.

Some say it's not a plug and play solution?

Yea, but who would expect someone would leave half the mower drive shaft on and then engage the PTO? Yep, anything is possible. BUT what are the chances?

Sorta like thanking a car manufacturer for building a car that someone can drive off a cliff...

Sorry, but I think this a reality...

If a finger needs to be pointed, then let's point it in the right direction..LOL

I think the stud was molded from the same metal as the case, unlike the example above. I'll look real close again.

I think it is molding there too - but I was hoping it was not, rather two pieces.

I see this type thing often on the BX's

BX's are considered (at least by me and some others) as big lawn mowers that happen to have a 3ph and sometimes a loader. It was originally designed as a lawn mowing machine, but they found that they could downsize everything and make it a full-featured little tractor. But in doing so, now people automatically think that it's a TRACTOR, and that it should be able to do real tractor stuff like pulling a 5' bush hog, lift hay bales, take out trees, do brush cutting, bulldozing, and a whole slew of other things that, honestly a larger tractor or a different piece of equipment would be better utilized.

I mean come on, they have a shade under 25hp, and so does the L2501, so it should be able to do the same amount of work right?? Wrong!!

Basically people often have higher expectations of the little baby tractor, than the tractor can actually meet.
