Had the mower deck off for the first time and it had previously been greased. Had to take it back off myself and had trouble getting the PTO shaft. Reconnected. Needless to say most of the grease it seems around the shaft connection came off on my hands once I got, the deck mounted should I try to go back and re-grease this area and if so how

I think it has a zerk in the middle of the shaft and I would give it a few pumps. Even if you got grease all over yourself there is still enough on the shaft. I give my shaft a couple pumps every other mowing time(I mow a few acres at once). It(the grease) will get distributed as the mower deck goes up and down.

Like cthomas said there’s a zerk in the U joint at either end of the PTO shaft. I also give mine a little bit every couple of mows (<5 acres). That shaft spins hella fast, so definitely want grease in there. All the grease on the outside that got on your hand is exactly that… grease that leaked/was pushed out of the joint by grease inside the joint.

It will be much easier to grease it while it’s off the machine. Not impossible once it’s mounted, but just easier.

I'll clarify my earlier statement about the MMM pto shaft not having a grease zerk. The shaft does not have a grease zerk. The universal joints do.
