Lucky guy. It did not went through the middle of the palm, so it looks like only the big thumb muscle was damaged and not some bones or tendon.

Hope your tetanus shot was not to long ago.

Ah, for all other friends here: every 10 years is a good idea for that shot.

The first time I had surgery on one of my hands, the right one, I had to relearn several things again. A couple of the hardest was brushing my teeth and zipping my pants left handed. It took me six months of phys-therapy 5 days a week just to move my fingers again. I finally learned how to do a lot of things left handed pretty well! It's really amazing what the body can learn to do.

PS; I wish you a rapid recovery! Do the work necessary to get better. Push through, persevere and you'll be back at injuring yourself in no time at all!! Sorry wrong speech, That's the one I keep having to give myself. Haha

A....H okay now I see, missed that first part, but I can see how that could happen. I too have had surgery on my hand, but it was just to repair tendons.
I pray for a speedy recovery
and remember no matter how bad it is , it could always be worse.
P.S. : you must be a better typer than me, cause with my typing it makes no difference one hand or two.

When I had my hand surgery, a full depth skin graft on the side of my rt index finger, (caused by a careless slip on the bandsaw) the worst part for me was not the surgery or the initial injury, but stiffening & loss of range of motion that occurred during the healing process. (hand was immobilized) The physical therapy was tough, but my therapist was a bit of a sadist, and really pushed me. (She didn't feel I was giving it full effort until she could see tears. Really!)
I am glad she did, my hand is virtually perfect now. So work that therapy hard when you get that far... it will be worth it.

In my little "note to self" moment I should have known to keep fingers away from high speed chain saws! Just about took my finger off.

I healed so well virtually no one even notices the graft scar on my finger, and I have no impairment at all. I had a very skilled surgeon. Rarely, someone will notice the more Frankenstinian scar on the under inside of my rt elbow, the donor site where the graft material originated. I usually tell them it is an old bullet wound from my former career in the intelligence services, then after getting a suitable reaction, I tell them the truth.:p
Incidentaly, I have a friend who has a bullet wound from a .45 through his hand, received at about 30 feet. His wound was very similar in appearance to yours, and he was in the clandestine service for the Brits.
So, if you need an alternate explanation to generate those great reactions.....:D

Hummmm......So it isn't a bad thing I was already thinking of a way of explaining. I was thinking it looked like a .45 wound :D

Or " I stopped a tank at it's barrel with my bare hand!"

As long it will heal, I think it is OK. A part of your life, you will remember when you are old, sitting on your rocking chair looking at your hand that hold a fresh opened beer.
