Perception with strangers is important to some people. To others it's not.
If I stayed in my forest and never went to town, I shouldn't care about any stranger's perceptions of me. But I still have to please my wife and be clean.
A crew cut, USMC style, is low maintenance, and keeps the bugs off. And keeps my wife happy.
I have friends with long hair and some with no hair. But I know them. Like you mentioned about your friends. And you mentioned that I would guess wrong about the pot smokers. Why is that... Because of common perception in this age.
In my retired profession high and tight crew cuts and no facial hair was part of the job. Why... because in society it is accepted as respectable authority. We dealt with the public.
So, it's your right to groom yourself. Frankly, you and your spouse decide what you want to look like.
it's a stretch, but to make a point; If I started wearing skirts and put on makeup, should I simply not care about what people think. Or would you think I'm mentally ill?
Edit: I don't care how people wear their hair. But be prepared for misconceptions if you grow it long.
