Craig's List, $50 for a 4' Spike aerator AND 6' rear blade... I was late to the listing but wrote back, in the title, I'll pay you $60

He called late that night and said I could have it. He was 'Cleaning out the yard" He was flipping the house and he wanted it out of the way. We got to talking and he asked about the prices since he had 200 emails about it!!! He was working all day and could not check his listing until the end of the day and my extra $10 sealed the deal!!!

I sold the spike aerator for $265 a few years later (I ended up buying a 5 foot aerator for $100 - that's just rusting away in the weeds now) I need to sell that and a few other things!!!

I also "got" a free 33 foot camper.... with the purchase of our property! Now, 18 years later, I need to junk the trailer!!! It was great to live in the first 10 years so we could save up for the house.

In 1973 my neighbor got a new car and put his 1958 Chevy Impala 2 door with a 348 in it on blocks in his back yard. I ask him if he wanted to sell it and he said sure he would. How much and he thought about it for a couple of minutes before he said to me $10 dollars. I couldn't get my wallet out fast enough.

Lined up outside a local Lowe’s is the usual garden tractor and zt units that I typically drool over with a “one day” mentality. I noticed an Ariens ICON XD with a tag that said half off, no warranty, see store GM. Hours on the unit were 6. I go inside and ask for the GM. Told them why I was asking, helper mentions that there’s a couple others also enquiring. I sit down on some bags of weed n feed to wait. An hour later I see some that we’re waiting have gone, a couple of others are also now waiting to see the GM about the XD. 2 Hrs total the GM walks up and says let’s go look at the unit. I asked am I the only one left? He says yep, tells me why the unit was so cheap, their policy, no warranty blah, blah. Then states, call this number when the unit arrives. Fast forward a a couple days, unit arrives, I check it over and go inside to call that number. It’s Ariens, asks for the serial number, confirms it and states “your unit is now registered for the warranty”. LMAO’d! $1600 out the door, zero% and got cash back for opening a Lowe’s card.
Need to remember to send that GM a Xmas card!

Great Thread Pigdoc!

The ‘63 Comet story reminded me of my BEST DEAL EVER MADE!

In 1986 I bought a 1964 Cessna 206 from a Mcdonnell-Douglas engineer for $29K because he needed to pay his daughters’ dental-school student loan. I bought it on the premise that it would first pass Annual Inspection which I would pay-for (cost me $1K addt’l)
My inspector found the incorrect prop had been on it for 5 years… which horrified the inspector who’d approved that for those 5 years….and so he paid for a new engine and prop out of his pocket to keep the info between ourselves rather than bring FAA into the story.

I flew that 206 for six years and put 800 hours on it….and sold it for $60K (basically flying it for free for 6 yrs and then doubling my money) to an oilman (Oscar Wyatt of Coastal Petroleum) who used it in his business.

It was also the WORST deal I ever made….because that airplane today is worth Four-Times as much.

I know it is not related, and the thread specifically states this is tool related, but every time I see the thread title I keep thinking back to when I was young and not married yet!

Oh well...nothing beats memory's that are triggered here at OTT!

About 10 years ago the wife was in the 'upgrade the kitchen' mode. We have separate Sub-Zero refrigerator and freezer. The front panels were replaceable and my wife wanted to get stainless ones to replace the original white panels. So I searched the interwebby. I almost choked when I saw how much they were - over $500 ea.

So back to ebay to search for a deal and I found. . .
A home mansion being remodeled on the Jersey shore with 2 year old Sub-Zero twins just like our 20 year old models - with stainless steel panels. I got one for $450 and the other for $5 more. Borrowed a small rack body from work, hired 2 drivers from work and 8 hours later they were in our kitchen.

Bought a 2007 Kawasaki Mule 3010 in 2014. Engine needed some work. Seized. Guy wanted it gone, I paid him $300 for it. That's all he wanted. Took it home, put a bearing in the block, polished the crank, put 2 brake cables on it, serviced it all up and kept it a while. Then in Sept I had a shop building put up on my place. I had my friend bring over a load of gravel for the driveway to the shop.

Later that year on veteran's day (which was on Monday, and I was off on Mondays), I was laying in the bed and seen a craigslist ad, "wanted kawasaki mule". I didn't use it all that much so I called the number and spoke with a guy. He said he was interested, and asked what I wanted for it. Told him I didn't know what the market value was. He said he did old tractors for a hobby, said load it up and bring it and see if we can trade an old tractor for it. Ok cool. Loaded the mule up, headed over there. About an hours' drive from the house. I know that area as my old coworker lived not too far away.

I get there, unload, let him drive it around. He had a bummed leg from his stay in Afghanistan (military). He liked it, flat floorboard, easy to get into/out of, will do exactly what he wants. Guy says come on out back and take a look at tractors he's working on. And this is where it gets interesting.

He had a Ford 3000 diesel, 3000 gas, 8N, 2N, a couple of old Harry Ferguson's, Case of unknown model, IH of unknown model, a New Holland and another one that I didn't recognize. They were just tractors. No loaders, no implements. Sitting to the side by itself was a Massey-Ferguson 1145. Loader installed. I asked about that one, he said yeah I'll trade you that one but here's the deal. It's not an 1145. It's an 1140, but with an 1145 engine. The 1140 is 30hp 3 cyl iseki. The 1145 tractor is almost identical except it is turbocharged, iseki 3 cylinder and 35hp. The issues that he knew it had were that the home-made intercooler (they were non-intercooled factory) had some holy welds in the tubing, some of the linkages were seized and/or stiff, and it didn't have power steering. Oh boy, loader? No power steering? Jeez...I ain't a fan already. Guy says sure I'll trade the mule for the tractor. I wasn't that hesitant, but I did tell him that I only had maybe $450 in the mule. He said he didn't care, he needed a Mule, I needed a tractor. So I traded straight across. Drove it onto the trailer, hauled it home. Got it home and moved the gravel with no power steering. Boy that'll make a man out of you! AFter I got through I parked the tractor in the shop and started looking it over. Had to pull the dash apart and free up the clutch and brake pedal linkages. No big deal. Got to looking and it has a tandem hydraulic pump, rear pump has a line that goes to the back of the tractor like normal. Front has a line that runs up by the battery. What? Pulled the grill out and up front by the battrey is a tank. Nothing in it. I dumped some old UDT into it and it ran out of the bottom as fast as I put it in. On the bottom is a suction hose from the tank to the pump, it was dry cracked so I made a new one out of a piece of old oil cooler hose I had laying around, I think it came from an RTV1100 or something. Dumped more oil in, fired the engine up, power steering.

So I got a tractor, with loader, and it runs/drives, and to this day I have not done a single thing to it (not even the used battery it came with), for about $450. Granted it is NOT pretty but it is what I needed, and a disabled vet got what he needed. I felt like we both did good.

1992, the salesman at work (I had just started that job and was there til 2020), said "you wanna buy a car"? Well what kind where is it can I look at it and how much???? 1975 Ford Maverick. $50. Sister owns it, I don't know much about it. Yea I bought it. Still have it too.

Started dating a lady in 2012 I think it was. I drove to her place about 3 days a week after work. On the way there (and back) was a little independent car repair place. In the lot, I knew there was a silver Mustang sitting there, seen it many times before and for the 3 years we dated, every time I went past I seen that car. I had a gut feeling, ya know, stop by and ask about it. It's been there for 5 or so years. I stopped in one day, said hey what's the deal with that silver 1993 Mustang? Guy says "4 cylinder 5 speed needs a motor, it's for sale, $250 with title". Told him ok, I'll go get the trailer, I'll pay you and take the title now and I'll just come back after hours to load it. Guy was fine with it, signed it over and I picked it up. Titanium Frost, looked really good other than being weathered. Coupe (not hatchback). Black cloth interior. 2.3L. I bought 2 junkyard engines from a guy I know for $150, one was out of a 92 Mustang convertible, the other out of a turbocoupe (both 2.3). I sold the TC engine for $400, put the convertible engine into the silver 1993, and drove it for 148,000 miles until I sold it.

2009 I had a small bass boat, I liked it. But it was too big to use on the creek. Sold it to a coworker and was going to figure out what to do later, since I didn't use it all that much, and my friend had a flat bottom that I could use about anytime. Found a ad on CL, guy in Fort Smith had a 1542 Grumman with a 25hp Yamaha 4 stroke. I was not a fan of 4 stroke, but the price was right ($1400 complete), so I made the 3 hour trip, bought it, took it home. I liked it but it was a riveted boat, and I was constantly bucking the rivets to keep them from leaking. The motor was sweet-I loved it! A year later I got tired of the boat, and ordered a new war eagle 1548 from where I worked (with trailer). While waiting for it to show up I sold the grumman for exactly $4 less than what the new one cost--and kept the motor (and a few other things). I still have it, but sold the motor in 2018 because a guy at the river wanted it bad ($2700!!), and I bought a new one at work, 25hp, but 50lb lighter weight and EFI. Still have it.

I wish I could find those kinds of deals now. I'm eyballing one at work, but I don't think I can get it cheap enough to justify it. 2017 Polaris RZR XP4 1000. Kinda been wantin one but I ain't spending new coin on it. I just can't justify the cost of a new one.

On further review. . . I just thought of the 'best' deal I ever made, that I didn't even know I made.

In 1972 one of the salesmen that worked for me came into my office while I was on the phone and said something about a fundraiser raffle for a high school sports league. Did I want to suppport it? Sure. I thought that was the end of that.

Fast forward a month or so and a friend and I went to look at the new De Tomaso Pantera at a dealership. It was $9k, a lot of $$$ to me. I really wanted it but $9k was out of the question.
11 O'Clock that night my salesman called me and said I won. Won what? I won a car in that raffle. I took the cash value instead. IIRC it was about $5K. I bought the Pantera the next day.

Well, I thought I'd made out pretty good a couple of times, but you guys make me look like a beginner!

Three tool related deals that made me a happy guy:

1. Two free 80 gallon 175 PSI air compressors. One was total junk, the other had a weak motor and was missing some fittings. I was able to combine parts from both to make one good one, then sold the tank from the other one for $100.

2. A free 16" Walker-Turner bandsaw. Cast aluminum covers stove up from a crash, but otherwise just surface rust and dirt. Converted it a metal cutting saw by inserting a gearbox in the drive train to slow it down.

3. A 1900-ish Seneca Falls Star 30 Lathe. It had been converted from line shaft to an electric motor. Gave the guy $50 for it and he helped me move it from his shop to mine. I've since put a few hundred into it for a reversing switch, QCTP, a 4 jaw chuck, a steady rest and a few other odds and ends. It'll never get within 10 thousandths again, but it's fine for the junkyard machining I do.

I bought a Marlin Cowboy 30-30 octagon barreled rifle NIB for $1000. Showed it to a collector friend who forced me to sell it for $2000! I bought played with and sold many collectable Marlins some as old as 120 years old and made good money on every one. Now old JM Marlins sell for ridiculous prices!

gotta add another one

marketplace ad says "hard cases for sale $10 each". I just happened to need two of them, so I told him I'd take two, where do I go to get em. Gives me the address, I head over there. Come to find out he's a Ford Mustang nut like I am. While we are trash talking outside, he asks me if I need any Mustang parts. Well not really, I sold my 93 turbo 4 cylinder (also a good deal), and still have this stupid 1992 GT. Come on let's go up in the attic and see what we can find. Great. I followed him up the attic ladder, cats followed me up there, turn on the lights and OMG this guy has a GOLD MINE of fox body Mustang parts. OE Cobra tail lights, ground effect, rear bumper covers, front bumper covers, sunroof bags, build sheets, wiper governors, stuff you can't buy anywhere. He says "you need a cargo cover?"....and of course, mine just happens to have Titanium interior, 2 years only so a titanium cargo cover in decent shape it scarcer than frogs teeth. Guess what? He's got 5 of them. I said how much? He says...oh I don't know (and in that short amount of time I'm thinking $500 each since that's market value for them), $40? $30? $20? Gimme $10 each. NO!! I told him $50 and he was fine with it. I bought one in Titanium and one in Opal for my dad's 93 Mustang GT (93's were opal gray, similar to Titanium but different). Both are show quality, unfortunately dad hasnt' taken very good care of his car and the "new" to him cargo cover is nicer then the rest of the car. I need to go get it and re-do the whole thing. It can be a nice car but only if he'll let me work on it. Bone stock, 5.0L, 5 speed manual. Mine is FAR from bone stock. 427" SBF, EFI, 6 speed Tremec, etc. It honestly is too powerful for the tires, but it's just a joy ride, attention getter. Someday I'll do something else with it. Someday.

No question @Fordtech86 wins but I did pretty good on my tractor.

When we bought our place in 2019, I was looking at the Kubota dealer and the salesman told me about this guy moving to an assisted living place. He knew the guy and had sold him the tractor new and all of the service was done at the dealer. So, he called the guy and he agreed to meet us so we went to his farm.

He had :

L4400HST, with FEL (520 hours), a 6 foot Bushhog, a 5 foot Bushhog finish mower, a post home digger (12 inch), a three row bottom plow, a spreader, a disc and a box blade.

Talked to him for about an hour and told him we had just moved from the city. He wanted $18,000 but told me if I took it all now he would do $13,500 and arrange, at his cost, for the dealer to deliver it the 30- 40 miles to my house. DONE!!!!

Sold the bottom plow and the Bushhog finish mower, still use all of the rest.

Older lady living near our old place couldn't get her late husbands snowblower started last winter. So I pulled apart the carb, cleaned it and rebuilt it. An hour of time and $25 in parts including fuel line, filter and shut off valve. I cleared her driveway as a test run. She asked if I wanted to keep it because it never starts when she needs it and will just get an electric one (not a ton of snow in the mid atlantic). I said sure, what do you want for it? She wouldn't take a dime. She then asked if I would be interested in an his old motorcycle. Hasn't run in years and had been sitting there for over a decade. I asked what she wanted for it and $500 was the answer. Tried to offer more but she just wanted someone to have it that would fix it and ride it.

My best score.

I put a Barbie dream house down by the road. A young women pulled in the drive in a beat to hell Astro van and asked how much. I saw two girls down the drive guarding the doll house. It was obvious that they did not have two dimes to rub together. I told her that I would walk down and help her load it at no cost and asked if the girls would like to shop in my tool shed.

The back of the shed had all kinds of toys that my adult children out grew years ago. Our grand kids live a good middle class life that I never saw and did not want hand me downs.

Anyways, these two little girls would not look up and shuffled to the shed. It was not hard to tell what caught their eyes. It appeared that they were to afraid to touch and ask. It took a good ten minutes to convince the girls and the mother that I wanted them to have what ever they wanted. A Little Tyke chalk easel, a couple of baby doll strollers and a few Barbie items and they were just kiddy with excitement.

The mother damn near cried as she gave me a hug that only a loving mother can give.

To this day I give away anything that has sat too long.

Other than my wife, kids, and grand kids I never really got my big score but watching some really needy kids get theirs is really worth it to me.

I am a really a poor capitalist !

Someday , somebody is going to get the beat the up B6200 for a handshake and a thank you.
