I was reading the MX manual the other day and noticed this comment re removing a plug when greasing the zerk fitting on the front axle support (FAS). I don't remember if the BX25 had a plug or not, but the M sure doesn't. I have no idea why the MX FAS has a plug and the M doesn't but someone thought is was necessary.

I can tell you from personal experience that it's hard to get grease into the bushing without removing the plug! The plug is a 7mm square nut but I had to get a much bigger wrench (adjustable crescent) on it in order to break it loose! The photo shows some paint bunched up on the plug head.

Honestly I glanced at the manual saw the zerk on opposite side and greased it….so is that square nut a viewing location to make sure packed with grease? I most certainly did not realize or read closely enough, and even now I still haven’t actually gone back to my manual since reading your post…I just thought interesting so that am inquiring. 🥃

I have run into that 7 MM square head plug before.
An L3010 and an L3540.
Very difficult to remove!
Nobody makes a 4 or 8 point socket in 7 MM.
MAC TOOLS had some universal socket that may work?
Ended up using a crescent wrench on one and vice grips on the other one,
Wonder what the Kubota tech's use?

L2501 has the same 7mm plug. I must be lucky as it just took a simple open end wrench when I removed it at my 50 hour maintenance.

Thanks for the heads up. I've done the greasing but never realized a plug had to be removed to do a complete job.

Very helpful; thanks. Just did the 50 hour on mine and completely missed that. Struggled a little with the nut but got it off OK. Didn't take much grease to have it come out the check hole, so that's good.

McMaster-Carr makes a 4 point socket for this. Use 9/32" instead of 7mm. They're interchangeable.

Hey @JoeR, I ordered the 4-point socket you linked to a few weeks ago and wouldn't you know it, I got to use it on the Delavan roller pump that I serviced yesterday. The pump has a 9/32" drain plug.

Same on GL series (at least 6060).

Grease cavity is sealed. Removing plug allows one to add grease without blowing out seal(s).

Swap it out for a grease relief plug. They open at 1-5psi and spring closed. Some kubotas have them. Kubota sells them for $17 but if you find the size you can buy like 15 for that price.
Also remember that the rear-most front axle mount starts to fill up the drive shaft tube. So just a few pumps is all it requires.

I'm glad this resurfaced. Since the weather was crappy, I spent most of yesterday doing maintenance on the Ford and greasing Katy's loader and backhoe. The only grease point in the manual for the L35 is the steering arm (except the 3ph which isn't installed). But while I was greasing it, I saw one on the rear trunnion, complete with the plug. I put a couple of shots in without pulling the plug. I see now I should have pulled the plug. I checked the parts list and it shows a zerk on the front trunnion as well. I didn't see one, but I'll crawl under there again this morning and check.

That zerk is easy to miss. After the first time removing it, I found it easy to put on/off with a small crescent wrench. That said, I have never felt compelled to buy a socket for it.

Like others have said, it doesn't take much grease to have it come out the relief hole. I just try to clean off that area prior to removing the relief plug to reduce the chance of me getting dirt/debris into the space when I put the relief plug back on.
