Let me first say that I did finally figure it out, so this post is mostly a resource to help someone out in the future.

So I pull the tractor our of the garage, so I can access my toolbox and work on the truck this Sunday.

Its starts just fine and I park it in the driveway. (luckily not in the way of my truck exit).

Well after I get done with the truck, the kids swing by for dinner, and of course my grandson wants to play on the tractor.

After dinner, they go to leave and I go to back the tractor in.

Turn the key and nothing. I have had this happen before but, usually if I wiggle the tredal pedal it fires up. Not this time though.

Of course my wife and daughter automatically say "Maybe you shouldn't let a 5 year old play on your tractor?"

To which I respond "To hell with that..... this is exactly what he should be playing on! If a little boy can break it, it probably wasn't worth a damn anyway"

I go though my mental check list

1. Did I push clutch in?.....check
2. Is the PTO in the 'disengaged?' ......check
3. is the treadle pedal centered?......check

Its cold out and I've had a few adult beverages, so I figure no good can come from a tipsy troubleshooter so I go in for the night.

Yesterday before I leave for work, I try it again. Still nothing.

I get to work and pull up the schematic and start planning out my troubleshooting plan.

In my heart of hearts, I know with 99% certainty that the treadle pedal switch has given up the ghost.

I have always found it very difficult to go into a trouble shooting situation with an "open mind". I instinctively have an idea of what I think is wrong and tend to focus on that. I have to actively restrain myself and force myself to start with the basics first.

This "troubleshooting impulse instinct" has gotton me into more troubles than I can count, and cost me many, many dollars, and much wasted time. So maybe I am finally learning.

Since you have to start somewhere, I do focus on the safety switch circuit. It appears that there are only 3 safety switch's. Clutch, PTO, and Treadle pedal. (Although I KNOW in my head there will be no need to check the others because it absolutely has to be the treadle pedal....right!!!)

My plan was as follows.

1. check/meter fuse
2. Bypass Treadle pedal switch using jumper wires.
3. Bypass PTO switch
4. Bypass Clutch switch.
5. Oh sh!t!!!! Ge the rum out and well......make another plan

Meter out fuse...Check.

Make jumper wires and Bypass Tredle pedal ......Check....turn the key and NOTHING!!!!! AgHHHHH...what the He!!

I was 99.9999999999% sure this was going to be it.

Trying not get rattled I turn my attention to the PTO micro-switch. When I touch it, I hear a "click". Then I think....Hmmm..........Turn the key and BAM, it fires right up.

Keep in mind the PTO is set to the disengaged position; However, it did not actually close the switch.

The good part is that I now know how to bypass the Treadle pedal switch and have a decent working knowledge of the starting circuit, in case I ever need it in the field.

I also now keep those jumpers in my tool box...Just in case.

I wear hearing aids and it was getting hard to hear things again like you speak of with the switch click, no way I would have heard that. Just got new ones and I heard my wife putting the collars on the dogs to take them out 40 ft away, the high pitched noise I can't hear at all with out them. I was explaining it to the hearing people how I can hear those sounds again, like the birds outside.

So I am glad you found your way thru it and got it running. Good story to hear a grandfather letting his grandchild have some safe fun too!

Yep...found that one on day one of playing with the tractor; I was trying to stand up to get a better view while inching forward....:)

Funny you should say that Bill.

My daughter and SIL are now saying that I have 'ruined him' forever.

Now he says he wants a "real tractor" for Christmas, not a "toy tractor"....😂😂😂
