B7510 rear wheel engagement problem

I was plowing snow today, and noticed a lack of power from my rear wheels. They turn around, but under any load, they don't seem to provide much power until I engage the differential lock. Then they work just fine. It drives fine on dry pavement. If they did not engage at all, I would assume something is broken, stripped or worn. The fact that they work fine, and provide plenty of power when the diff. lock is engaged must be a clue? Thanks!

I'm going to guess that one wheel is spinning. Tractors have an "open" diff and if one wheel spins all the power for that wheel goes to the spinning wheel. All that said when using the diff lock stop all motion and then after engaging it move slowly till it latches. It is a simple pin that can get sheared off if you engage it while one tire is spinning.

One other possibility is if you don't see a tire spinning, that you might have a flat tire and it's spinning in the rim.

When you say it drives fine on dry pavement, is that in 2wd?

Raise both rear wheels. Unlock the brake pedals from each other. Now engage the park brake-only one pedal will lock down. Does the other wheel spin easily? If the left pedal is locked the left wheel should not turn at all. If it does, you may have a broken axle, damaged gear, or possibly the hub itself is junk. Those use those old clamp-style hubs and it wouldn't be the first time I've one I've seen fail.
