I have a M6060 that wont start after sitting since last fall. found battery was dead so i replaced it. it would crank over and almost start and white/gray smoke out of the exhaust. so i changed the fuel filter and drained the separator and bleed the air out per manual. tractor still does the same thing. cranks over fast and almost starts still nothing but white smoke.

where should i go from here?

I don't have that tractor but......
'white' smoke, usually means water in the fuel or cylinders.
Do you have proper antifreeze in the rad ?? Is the level correct ??
exhaust was covered ??
'sat since last fall'..... I'd drain 100% of the fuel tank, fill with fresh diesel, install new filters(again), prime/purge as per manual, hit glowplugs for 30 seconds, try to start.
repeat heating glow plugs/start at least 5-10 times

The M60 series had changes made to the glow controller so that if a block heater was installed the engine computer would take its temp sensor not from the coolant sensor but an outdoor sensor.

With the M40 like M7040 I learned of a way to bypass the glow controller and take manual control of the glow plug cycle..
I will provide it here and suggest you try it on your machine.

Try it but dont heat for more than a count of 8.

If it works the engine will fire instantly without cranking.

My first thought was lack of heat, maybe your info will help.

Hair dryer directed into the intakes might get it going if the glow plugs aren’t working.

NEVER NEVER NEVER use starting fluid or ether.

White smoke on a cold start with a diesel usually indicates too much fuel going through the cylinder or not enough heat to burn what fuel is is going in. On really cold days, my 7040 will emit a white haze until the engine is really good and warmed up.

Greensvillejay certainly has a valid point about water but the filters should be eliminating that.

I would suggest that you run a good diesel additive through your system. You may have an injector sticking and some additive such as Howes, Power Service, Diesel Kleen or Stanadyne may help with that. As I mentioned above, the white smoke may be too much fuel going through a cylinder and not combusting. Think of it as an oil drip on an exhaust manifold…..you get white smoke.

If you suspect water in your fuel, go with the Stanadyne. It contains no alcohol and removes the water from the fuel solution and the particles are trapped in the fuel filter instead of being dispersed in the fuel and going through the pump and injectors causing corrosion and sticking injectors from deposits.

Also, are you giving it throttle when it begins to fire? I had to use an old Case tractor (40 years old) last year. During cold weather, I would have to cycle the glow plugs three times, then start cranking. The engine was a 6 cylinder and they would light off one by one. It would blow white smoke rings and I would add throttle and it would finally run on all six. Loved cranking that thing.

Since it's been sitting awhile have you checked the air cleaner, mouse nest will foul that up.
That's a computer controlled engine so don't get into it without knowing what your doing, as a small screw up can cost big bucks!
