New tractor owner. Local dealer sold me a kubota MX6000. I asked for the largest bush hog this tractor would safely operate on steep and rolling hills( primarily grass) They sold me a 12’ landpride batwing and had to add a valve to run it. Driver who delivered the tractor and batwing told me the tractor was way undersized to safely operate this size batwing on hills- can anyone confirm this or give any insight.

First what part of the country are you in? A terrain question.

Second how is your tractor set up? Front end loader, wheel weights, or loaded tires? What type of tires? Weight of the tractor as it sets? Weight of the mower?

Yes they match a 12' batwing to that tractor.
Did you load the tires?
And a hill question is impossible for us to answer, slope degree and attack angle is the variable here.

Check out Landpride's website. They have the "tractor matched" option and all of these are shown as being suitable for an MX tractor. They're all pull type and don't exceed the rating of the MX for pulling with a draw bar. Maybe there's a reason the delivery driver is doing deliveries and not sales.

You should be ok. I'd want ag tires, loaded, and probably some front weight if no front end loader. 4wd on the hills.

Thanks for the feedback.
I am in Kentucky. Land is smooth but hills are pretty steep.

It does have a front end loader. No wheel weights, but they are filled. I believe the MX series only has two tire options - ag and industrial. Mine are Ag.

tractor weighs 4,26816 plus the loader
mower weighs 2,540lb

Appreciate the literature reference - that was helpful.
Yeah, felt like the driver seemed pretty knowledgeable and was on my property to see the terrain in person, but you make a good point.

The tractor will be much better mowing on hills with the loader removed.
It will lower the center of gravity greatly.

The driver might be very knowledgeable, but he might not be familiar with Landpride or Kubota specs. If you look at the owner's manual for the MX tractor line, you'll see the following information for trailers, and that's what your folding rotary cutter is as far as the tractor is concerned.

Trailer
Max. load capacity > 9,840lb
Max. draw bar load (tongue weight) > 1,650lb

By the way, I'm envious of your rotary cutter and would love to see photos of it behind the MX. (y)

Here are a couple of pics. I’m excited to put it to work. Just didn’t want to end up in the trees at the bottom of one of my ridges I’d the tractor was under sized

And removing the FEL supposedly puts less wear and tear on the tractor too since the loader isn't bouncing around. I still need to modify the front weight bracket I got for the M and maybe make one up for the MX for this summer so that I can run the flail and rotary cutters with the loaders removed.

Holy Moly! That's one cool-looking setup and a very nice property. Given that the cutter is a little over 1/4 of the max weight rating for pulling on the drawbar, as listed in the owner's manual, I can't imagine you having any trouble at all.

Are the rear tires set to the widest setting? Front weights will improve the traction and "feel" of the tractor on the hill sides. After mowing with the tractor you might find the iron wheel weights will also improve the feeling of control on the hills.

Do you have a friend or family nearby with tractor experience? Do not hesitate to ask for advice. An accident that is prevented from happening is always a good thing. Experience will be a great teacher. Pay attention to things like dew on the grass and the moisture in the ground. Soil that is to wet or to dry can give you problems until you gain the experience from mowing the hills a time or two.

Best of luck.

It appears your mowing will be more of the maintenance type verses clearing saplings, brambles and such. I think you should be fine. I agree that taking the loader off makes a lot of sense. Use 4 wheel drive on the hills. It enables much better control. I nearly shit myself last year before the experienced people here provide this knowledge. Take your time and be careful. Tractors can kill .

A good thing to know, if you don't already; Generally , there are no brakes on the front axle of compact Kubota tractors. The only way to allow braking on the front axle is if you have the tractor in 4 wheel drive. The brakes on the rear wheels will, thru the driveline, brake the front axle.
You'll realize this eventually.

I had a scary experience on my asphalt driveway moving a large rock with the MX6000 HST the summer before last. I was in 2WD and started to slide on the asphalt and then the fishtailing started. Not much fun, especially when jumping off the tractor is an option that you're considering in the moment! I was lucky though and managed to get the tractor under control. I should have dropped the loader but I guess I didn't want to damage the driveway. I really didn't think it through prior to heading down the hill.

If your planning on mowing all that grass with that mower, I think your going to be sadly disappointed in the cut quality, as that's not a finish mower like you've been using.
A mower like these would have been a much better option.

The striped grass you see in the one photo is my main yard that I have large mower for. The stuff I’m bush hogging is the hills behind the unit in the photo that shows the basketball goal. It’s mostly grass, but not looking for a finished mow look necessarily

I have 600lb of wheel weights on my MX as well as Rim Guard in the rear tires and I think it helps with stability and traction. You might want to consider wheel weights. @Matt Ellerbee has weights too. I do plan on sipping the R4 tires at some point for winter traction. Just need to buy the tool for that.
