My L3240 HST has recently displayed Error-81, Pedal-NG codes on the display. Pedal increases throttle speed but no movement forward or reverse. Cruise control lever will operate tractor forward, as described in the troubleshooting manual. The temps here have been close to zero, and after the tractor warms up it operates normally. Is this a cold related problem or an omen of pedal repairs about to be required?

Likely the sensor located on the HST pedal (or wiring circuit for this sensor)

The cruise control lever and HST pedal sensor are the same part number, so it is possible to swap to see if error code moves with sensor or stays with circuit.

Sensor is approximately $125

The sensor can be bench tested by monitoring resistance and rotating sensor slowly. There are two circuits within the sensor. One increases with rotation and the other decreases with rotation. Need to check both.

If a new sensor is needed it must be calibrated to the tractor. This can be done by accessing the Intellipanel and following the process outline in the WSM. It's a simple process, but a few steps must be followed.

Error codes can also be pulled or reset using the intellipanel. (See WSM)

I find it 'crazy' that anyone still use 'pots' as sensors for 'throttle' sensors. even If they are totally sealed, the wear and will give false readings. Anyone remember 'crackle' in old skool audio equipment or guitar foot pedals ??

Companies that have a monopoly on the replacement parts have little to no incentive to improve long term quality. The replacement part business is simply too lucrative when no competition exists. Case in point. The HST sensor is $125 while a similar auto TPS is under $35 at rock auto with several options below $25. (1998 Jeep 4.0L)

I'm all for companies making a profit, but the monopoly the OEM tractor companies enjoy is detrimental to their customer base.

Thanks 200 MPH! As soon as it warms up a little, I'll swap the pedal and cruise sensors and see what happens. Will I need to make any sensor calibrations after the swap, or just when a new sensor is added?

Yes, you'll need to calibrate after the swap.

Reason: Each sensor has some variability, so the calibration ensures the pedal or cruise operate as correctly.

Before swapping, you can view sensor outputs through the panel. Might be interesting to see what the voltage is with change in pedal position.

Good luck.
