Worked very well for me and my BIL. The only lost oil was what was in the filter. Recently used that same approach to change the windshield washer pumps on the Trailblazer. When the pumps were pulled, the reservoir yodeled air back through the open holes. Kinda like when the grandkids try to get the last of a milkshake with a straw.

I've used the vacuum trick before. It worked.

Last weekend, did my 600 HR service which called for HST filter replacement (not suction filter). I simply plugged the vent line at the top of the rear end using a nailset to plug the breather tube. Didn't lose much hydraulic fluid as all. 🤷‍♂️

For sure if you have the vacuum set to blow air out instead of sucking air, you will loss a lot of oil and make a mess of the shop floor. The shop vac also sounds the same, blow or suck... 🤬👺
From personal experience?

When I changed the underside fuel filter on my BX, used a shop vac, funnel, and some duct tape. Might have lost 1 or 2 drops of fuel. Much better than having diesel fuel fill up your underwear. :ROFLMAO:
