Lots of Noise Front of Engine No pressue to bucket

I drove my L275 down the road to my sons place which is less than a mile. As I slowed I noticed some LOUD noises coming from the front end. My heart sank thinking it was the lower end of the engine. Parked the tractor and went back the next day with the trailer. Started it up and it's making a heck of a racket and the bucket would not raise. I see the belt moving so all three pulleys are spinning with no visible wobbling. What can go wrong with the front of the PTO and or what should I be looking for as I pull off the bucket pump? I appreciate any advice

Well I just removed the pump and started the engine. I can hardly believe the pump made that much noise but it did.....

You should be very pleased that the issue is ONLY the pump!

Is it the pump, or the pump drive. My bet would be the drive (coupling).

Parts for that setup are going to be extremely hard to find, most are obsolete.
You may end up having to change it out and make new parts to drive the pump.

That is what I've found so far, the pumps available on ebay are not the same. That is where most searches lead. Hope the local dealer can assist...

Please tell us what model loader is on the tractor or post a few pictures of what you have for the benefit of folks like myself that can only guess.

Pumps are pretty interchangeable - drive line parts may be more of a problem. Building a complete system from scratch is not out of the question but it requires machining capabilities. In the long run that may be the most affordable solution.

If the pump failed, you could very well have a system full of metal contamination, that will have to be delt with.

You'll need to get the casting (model number off the pump).
A dealer is going to be of little to no use on this, and if they do have or know where to get the pump, it will be stupid expensive!

There is quite a few options available depending on what you have and what you need.

1. OK, Thanks for the info on Metal in the system...Hadn't thought of that.
2. I could not find a number of the pump at all, just the name WEBSTER.
3. An additional item is the shaft connecting the pump to the front PTO. I tried to find a release similar to implements that attache to a PTO and am unable to find anything. I believe this part has been on the PTO since new, I sprayed with PB blaster to help release but may need to remove the radiator to get a better view. It is stuck at this point unless someone can point me to a release mechanism.
4. In the center of the shaft there is a dual chain possibly a slip clutch... this could be bad as well.

What I know is when I removed the pump the noise went away. Suggestion on troubleshooting each please.

5 the key-way on the end of the shaft is smooth to the touch in the counter clockwise direction when facing straight on. Thoughts?

wow, someone ran that for quite awhile and 'messed things up' !!!
double roller chain is the 'coupling' between engine and pump, allows for a MINOR (small) mismatchh in alignment.
keyway in #6 photo is shot, must be replaced, I don't see any 'mid ' support for the connecting shafts.
Since the pumps a Webster(big USA name) I suspect previous owner made this 'upgrade' ?
'click' engine over couple of times( no start !) to see the front PTO shaft rotation, you need a pump with the OPPOSITE rotation

Is this connecting shaft a standard shaft? I cannot find an IPB for this unit nor can the Kubota dealer. Does someone have a PN for the shaft? How does it connect to the PTO, can't find a release... Thanks.(y)

I would say you didn't a "pump" failure, as much as you had a "coupling" failure. The key should fit snugly into the grove in the pumpshaft, and in the grove of the coupler. I am thinking both keyways a shot, which means a new coupler and a new pump. Plus the pump should slid snugly into the coupling.

If you know what to buy, you can get them off the internet. If not, then a hyd shop should be able to help you as much as a tractor dealer.

That was my thought, a coupling failure, the key destroyed or missing. maybe the pump is still ok?

It might be, but if it's not, and he reuses that pump, he will be going down that same road all over again.

In the picture #4 the chain coupling connecting link is at the top. If you can get it out and the chain off then have the shaft to measure to replace the beat out coupling on the pump end. Might be able to get a shaft coupling to replace that along with a pump to get you going. You wouldn't be guessing at the length etc. Assuming of course the crankshaft end is still sound.

The easy thing to do is hook it up to run off the tractor hydraulics. It will be a little slower but it'll work just fine. You will need an adapter block and a couple hoses.

No, not really... if it runs slower , that's not fine....

That's like saying just do 50 down the interstate instead of 65.

BTW, without knowing the specs of the Webster pump, the tractor may not be capable of running whatever 'loader' is on the tractor. There's a lot of missing info like PSI, GPM, lift capacity,etc.

I dont see anything special there - looks like all commodity parts. You should be able to replace everything from chain coupler out including the pump for $300 to $400. I have done a few.

But 007 has the right idea - dump that rig and use the tractor hydraulics.

What you have is fairly standard for the vintage of the tractor and there are many threads on this forum that discuss the arrangement and how to resolve problem.

The front of the engine’s crank shaft extends through the pulley and was used for auxiliary power. That shaft has a splined outer diameter and Kubota sold a shaft that fit onto the spline and had some sort of set screw locking to keep it in place. That shaft extends out to a coupling (in your case a roller chain coupling). Half of the coupling is on the tractor side and the other half is on the the shaft extending out to the front of the tractor (in your case that shaft goes to the pump and it looks like there is a second solid coupling at the pump shaft.). As others said it looks like the solid coupling failed.

This system could supply p to a larger flow pump than the standard pump and was used for front end loaders. There was also a electric PTO clutch that could be fitted there to turn on and off the power transmission out of the shaft
