Use your clutch!

Once again, Neil Messick does a good job explaining the use of the clutch when engaging the PTO.
He's got an L4310 (about a 20 yo Kubota) in the shop.
Curious, I checked my L35 and sure enough the same PTO engagement parts are used.

Not possible for all of us, the L3560 doesn't have a clutch. All you can do is press the little yellow button at a lower rpm.

Having 'cut my teeth' on an AC with transmission driven PTO, it never occurred to me to not use the clutch. But many newer tractors use a friction clutch and independent PTO, so I can see the confusion.

BTW, our L35's do have the overrunning clutch similar to your diagram, but don't use it for shifting. Instead, gear 5 in the figure below slides in and out of engagement with gear 4. Same precaution applies, of course.

When I bought my tractor the mechanic explained I should use the clutch when engaging and disengaging the PTO to reduce the wear on the internal gears. This video is helpful in that it shows exactly what's going on. Thanks for sharing.
