Celebrating one year on my L3901, replacing the 34 years on my 1950 8N. The only other tractor I have owned. (Wow, what a difference!) The 8N needs to be split. It chews up starter bendix and deposits them in the bell housing. It is 12 volt and everything else worked fine. Any suggestions as to how much I might be able to sell it for

Picture would help but the reason it chews up gears is that someone tossed a 12 volt battery into a 6 volt tractor. BTDT, it's quite a common thing to do..
What people don't do is replace the starter with a REAL 12 volt one ( need 12v field coils) AND some tractors require a different ring gear and bendix gear.
Any good running 8N up here will fetch $2000.....
Last one I refurbed got $3500

12 volt conversion ( including 12 volt battery, starter, generator, coil, voltage regulator and new wires,all 12 volts were done in 1998) worked fine until last year.

Craig's List is always a good place to evaluate the market. Around here you can have your choice of good runners for $1000 to $1500. You can pay another $1000 for one with a fresh rattle can paint job. The last one I bought was $800 for this non-runner that started with a carb kit, clean fuel, and a jump start. I put another $1000 worth of front and rear tires and rims on it two years ago.....

Take the starter off, and check the front bushing in the housing. It is probably worn out allowing the starter Bendix gear to run out of alignment with the ring gear.

Had a quick look on line, seems all N series starter have 9 teeth,so not the 'normal' problem I see,assuming the 12v starter spins at the 6 v starter speed.
Agree, probably an alignment issue, maybe starter not seated correctly , so the entire face( width) of the pinion ( Bendix) gear is NOT in full contact with the ring gear. Either that or a bad batch of Bendix gears....
