I need to replace a paper gasket on my 3 pt rotary tiller where the shaft goes into the side gearbox. I received the replacement gasket from the mfgr but I’m not sure what kind of sealant material to use.
could you all please give some info on brand or type? Is a general gasket maker paste adequate here ?

thanks in advance

You can use Never-Seez or a thin film of Permatex Gasket Eliminator on each side of the paper.

Permatex Aviation No. 2 is my favorite for almost all gaskets (except head gaskets) where Permatex Copper Spray is my go-to. Almost 50 years experience with both types and never been sorry.

I like to use a very thin coat of blue RTV. It seems to come back apart cleanly if disassembly is required at some future date.

All good stuff.
Check and see if the manufacturer recommendations are there too.

I like to use Gasgacinch on a lot of applications.

Permatex #2 is good if you don't have to take it apart again. If you do, the paper will tear. Some paper gaskets are so thin that you almost don't need anything. In the old days, we would use a skim coat of chassis grease to seal them. Just remember that the next time you have to take it apart, a replacement gasket might not be available. Buy 2 if they aren't that expensive.

I use that as well. I make a judgement on how much to use knowing that hard gaskets might allow nearly all to squeeze out so I just mist it on, and soft paper may need a heavier coat.

Permatex #2 is good, but if necessary, the gasket will not be reusable.
Better buy, 2 gaskets if you need only one!

I usually put that sort of thing together dry.

Ditto. Unless the part is warped, no sealer should be needed.

Often, using a sealant make future disassembly more of a mess and absolutely ruins the gasket. While I prefer to replace a gasket each time, on a Sunday afternoon, that might not be an option so being able to disassemble and reuse is a good thing as well.
If it is not possible to assemble the part dry with no oil on the surfaces, I'll wet the entire gasket with oil.

If the OEM specified the use of a sealant, I will use it then. Often, this is only with rubber gaskets and a sealant that is then and can peel off clean. Something like Threebond.

Less is more.

in all my years experience, unless the manual states it should have some goop on it, it goes on dry. Or if there ain't no manual, and the old one didn't have any goop on it, new one goes on dry. Tube of silicone nowadays costs quite a bit, probably more than the gasket. Why waste money if it ain't needed?

Agreed. No need for any goop if new gasket, mating surfaces in good condition and clean.

Yes… I might have better emphasized the words “almost all”… There certainly are gaskets which are better left dry. Thermostat housings and exhaust manifolds come to mind…

Only if the manual states it needs it. Like where engine cases meet. If I need something to hold a gasket in place I will put a couple dabs of Yamabond #4 in a few spots. It's a non hardening liquid gasket.
