August 8, 1982.
A line drive foul ball hits a four year old boy in the head at Fenway. Jim Rice, realizing in a flash that it would take EMTs too long to arrive and cut through the crowd, sprang from the dugout and scooped up the boy.
He laid the boy gently on the dugout floor, where the Red Sox medical team began to treat him.
When the boy arrived at the hospital 30 minutes later, doctors said, without a doubt that Jim's prompt actions saved the boy's life.
Jim returned to the game in a blood-stained uniform. A real badge of courage.
After visiting the boy in the hospital, and realizing the family was modest means, he stopped by the business office and instructed that the bill be sent to him.
This is what a sports hero looks like!

I’d say that’s a hero who just happened to make a living playing a sport.

Not all heros wear capes. Or ball caps or helmets. Some deliver pizza.
It always bothered me the way government projects are named, usually after some sitting governor or other politician - ie the Tappan Zee Bridge was renamed Governor Mario M. Cuomo Bridge when it was redone. Pretty funny in hindsight.

Why not name these things for Medal of Honor recipients or others who were truly 'heroes'?

They have removed all references to the Tappan Zee Bridge, so people that are not familiar with the name change are confused about where they are headed. Stupidity at its best. It reminds me of a 100-year-old company that has always maintained a perfect reputation by changing its name. Way too many people with time on their hands minding other people's business

I always figured that a hero was someone that through no fault or choosing of their own, was in the wrong place at the wrong time and made the right choice
