Diesel vs. off-road doesel

Off-road diesel is the same as on-road diesel but, you don’t pay road taxes (cheaper) and it has a dye in it.

Can I run off road diesel in my tractor? It never leaves my property.

At the family farm, when they made a delivery of diesel and heating-fuel.... they dispensed from THE SAME TRUCK and still charged two different prices.

Susan you can use off road diesel in your tractor no matter where it is being operated.

Only time one should not use off road diesel in a tractor is if it's being used on a construction site for a state highway construction!

Which one was more expensive?. No one uses heating oil down here. so I am not sure which way to guess. (Guessing the heating oil cost less)

That's exactly what it's for.


I run mostly Home Heating Oil in mine, because I can sometimes get it free.


And it's exactly the same thing.

Almost the exactly the thing. Home heating oil may have up to 5000 ppm of sulfur in it. Diesel is now down to 15 ppm.
Any engine guys know what high sulfur does to the new low sulfur engines ?

What the regs allow and what is actually sold may differ, and does. It comes from the same tank. It's too expensive to produce separate products.

In many states 15ppm is all that's allowed in heating oil.

Maybe. But if they are designed to operate on low sulfur levels, it's more likely that it's not good for them.

If the off-road is sold through a co-op as motor fuel, it will be identical to gas station diesel. The only difference is the color, which tips off the cops if you get pulled over and checked for using off-road in your road truck. They want the taxes of road diesel. The juice is the same. I've never dealt with heating oil....so dont know if thats the same or not.

they use it too, at least they do here. Seen them filling the equipment the other day, spilled red fuel. Plus they get bulk discounts, and pay no taxes on it.
