Off center zerk

Hi,

I was greasing my tractor (BX23S) and discovered that once of the zerks is "off-center" and I can't get the grease gun to connect to it. This is the 2nd time that I've greased the tractor and I'm pretty sure that I greased this one last time, but I have a new grease gun now.

I have some pictures and I'm looking for suggestions. Should I somehow repair/replace it? Should I get an extension which might be narrower? ???

Looks like it got bent. I'd put a new one in.

I agree. It's probably bent or cross threaded. Get a new fitting and hopefully the threads aren't ruined and it will go in straight.

Thanks - I'll try that. I had unscrewed it and pulled it out and it looked OK to me, but I'm still a novice.....

Look at the hole, if it is off center or tapped crooked, replace the pin.

AND if new, get the dealer to supply the replacement pin.

Did you buy the tractor new or used? Mentioning greasing only twice prompts this question...

Edit: I meant supply the replacement pin. Sometimes a repair you can do yourself is much cheaper time wise than getting the warranted tractor back to the dealer for repair.

First things FIRST. Pull the pin, examine to see if the zerk-hole is “centered” and if you can simply replace the zerk with another that is not “bent” or cross-threaded.

Zerks can be SAE or Metric. Many Kubota accessories (front end loader or backhoe etc) are made in the U.S. and have SAE parts. Some items are made elsewhere …or have Metric for various reasons. You’ll have to determine THESE THings before you jump to calling in a dealer for “warranty” work on a pin.

"Warranty" work on the pin should be relatively simple.
The OP could remove the pin, and take the pin to the dealer for replacement.
Too difficult for the OP to remove the pin, or have a friend remove it for him?

Using a needle grease gun tip for just that fitting would be the easiest solution.

Just to add something...in my case when I pull a pin, I have another pin available to slip in from the other side when the pin I want out comes out.

The reason is to hold things in place that might shift when the pin comes out.

Just what I do, and have had no issues doing so...Just think it could be a nightmare trying to realign things if things shifted when the original pin came out.

Then reverse the procedure when the original pin or a new one goes in.

Works for me...

Perhaps I’m misreading you…. but calling the dealer for warranty …for a zerk damaged by the owner…. would be a silly thing.

If the operator crammed a grease gun onto the zerk with a too-tight grip on the gun-end…and then “Pried” the gun loose from the zerk with a hard side-ways action …thereby bending the zerk or ripping it from the threads…. it won’t likely be a “warranty” item. Warranty would not likely include abuse.

Either way, pulling the pin…. the first thing I suggested…. would probably / hopefully make it OBVIOUS that taking it in-hand to the dealer would be a simple thing to do.

I'd be amazed if the hole were off center. And those fittings are recessed to prevent getting broken.

Update. I pulled the zerk and it looked fine to me (see picture). The hole in the pin also looked fine to me. I suspect that the previous owner somehow cross threaded the zerk. With a little bit of strong love I was able to screw the zerk back in centered . All is good for now and I have some ideas about what to do if this eventually fails.

I like the idea of a "placeholder" pin to keep things from shifting when replacing the pin - I was thinking the same thing - it's nice to know that I wasn't crazy

Just an FYI, I bought a Lock & Lube fitting for my gun and it doesn't fit in the recessed grease fittings on my Woods BH. No problems on the FEL.

Update. I pulled the zerk and it looked fine to me (see picture). The hole in the pin also looked fine to me. I suspect that the previous owner somehow cross threaded the zerk. Tom - that might have been why I didn't have trouble the first time I greased the tractor. My old grease gun had a "standard" fitting, the new one has a lock-n-lube fitting.

Sounds like that's it. I switch in-between them now.
