The only homemade I’ve seen are old trans input shafts.
I also have one of these. It may be available at Auto Zone or Advance under the tool loan program.

I've used a dowel rod. Something close in diameter and then build it up with black tape. Never had a problem!!!

Unless the flywheel has been milled, just go by the wear pattern on the flywheel. I find there is play in most alignment tools and I always fine tune the alignment with the polished surface of the flywheel. As long as you can see the disk touching the flywheel in a few places you're good to go.

I've used the wooden dowel for decades, then when I couldn't my my 'custom made broom stick', used a piece of 3/4" copper tubing and 3 wraps of black tape. W55 is right, 'follow the pattern', makes it easy too !

I have lathes out the wazoo and the turned broom stick I used on a 62 TR4 circa 1973. I also have a commercial $20 clutch alignment toolkit I bought decades ago. It has paid for itself many times over. Ebay and Amazon will deliver one to your doorstep for "free".
