IF so, what could cause this? If the filter is in the high pressure side of the hydraulic pump, and the filter media plugged up due never being changed, or due to something happening that put lots of contaminants in the fluid, maybe that would be the cause?
The HST filter on a BX is filtering the steering return oil which is used as the charge oil. This circuit has a relief valve set at 80-100 PSI. If the filter is plugged, or there is internal damage/failure in the HST, it will swell the filter canister until something fails and dumps the pressure.

Any idea what I should check? It still moves just weak and won’t pull a steep hill

Maybe I missed it, but what type of fluid has been used, and how many hours on it?

Given the swell of the filter, may not be an issue. Dieseldonato and whitetiger sound like they are being very helpful.

Here are the tests for checking your hydrostat. The charge pressure is a little lower on the earlier units than I remembered, 43PSI to 70PSI. Later units are 80PSI to 100PSI.
Perform the Charge Pressure and the High-Pressure Relief tests.
