In the process of showing my old L1500DT some love, I am changing the hydraulic oil.
I couldn't find a WSM for the L1500 but I believe the L175 is very similar. It tells me that the oil should be SAE 80 Gear Lube, and capacity is 22.04 Litres.

I got 20L of SAE80 from a local oil specialist.
When I drained the transmission, i took out over 25 Litres, and it was still coming (my 25 L container was full). The oil looked orange but after sitting for a while it separated and is actually red, with some water in it. I drained a further 5L out before it finally stopped coming out. (Using the drain plug under the main transmission case). So that was about a total of 30L I took out.

When refilling it only took about 18L before it was coming out of the level plug on the side of the transmission. (Tractor is on level ground).

Do you think the transmission was over full, or has water been getting in? Or maybe the L1500 simply has a different capacity than the L175? (But then, I took out 30L, and only put in 18L before it was coming out the level plug?).

Cant help with volumes but I would be interested in knowing what sort of SAE 80 gear oil you acquired. Thats a strange beast in this day and time.

For future reference the current reccomendation would be UTTO not gear oil. It easier to find and considerably less expensive.

I would think 80 weight gear oil would be a bit thick for a hydraulic system. I believe Kubota currently recommends their SUDT2 for all hydraulic systems.

😆 Well your damned if you do and your damned if you don't... 😆
Just going by the book :)

I looked up UTTO from my local supplier - exact same price as 80 weight gear oil. I guess now I have to drain it all back out, dispose of it, and refill with UTTO.... that's £80 I won't get back!

You dont have to do anything. You have been given updated guidance that supercedes the onsolete guidance in your 50 year old book. What you choose to do with it is up to you.

I would also suggest you shop around for UTTO prices. I know European fuel prices are higher but the number you were quoted for UTTO would be on the high side in the US.
