Hello everybody,

I want to change the oil in the gearbox and the frontaxle.
For the gearbox I found that 80W-90 would be fine and for the front axle my manual recommends SAE 90. Are these the same oils or is there a difference?

Can I use the 80W-90 in the front axle?

Regards, Michi

The 90 in 80W-90 is the grade of the oil, or the oil's viscosity at operating temperature, thus it is an SAE90 gear oil. The 80W means it's a multiviscosity oil. It isn't a weight but describes how much better the oil flows cold than straight SAE90 gear oil would. An 80W-90 oil will lubricate better when the oil is cold than a straight SAE90 oil would while retaining the same performance at operating temperature. The only disadvantage is the multiviscosity oil will shear down over time becoming thinner necessitating more frequent changes.

Short version: Those manual recommendations are somewhat dated. I would have no problem using a modern 80W-90 or 75W-90 gear oil year round (except in very cold climates) at the recommended service interval.

More than likely not. The parts manual for the B1550 which I think is similar to your machine shows straight cut bevel gears in the front and rear differential.

I ordered now a 10W-30 (STOU) oil with following specifications:

used as motoroil:

•API: SF/CH-4

•ACEA: E5

used as gearboxoil:

•API GL-4 SAE 80W

used as hydraulic oil:

•HLP 68, ISO-VG 68

Can i use this type of oil for hydraulics and transmission too? If yes, it would mean i can use it for the whole tractor?

Nobody an idea?
Possibly one of the Kubota dealers or mechanics will speak up- I would imagine that nobody wants to be responsible for damage to your hydraulic system. If it were my tractor, I would use 80W-90 or 75W-90 in the axle, and dedicated hydraulic oil in the hydraulic system. It would surprise me if gear oil, which is thick and clingy, would work in a high flow hydraulic system- I don't want to be the one trying it out, or recommending that someone else do it.

Motor oil in the motor.

Hydro oil in the hydro system. Usually shared with trans, rear drive.

Gear oil 75/80W-90 in the front axle.

Do you have the owner's manual?

I do have a kind of manual, but it contains most information about operating.

The STOU is a universal oil and its specifications for use as a motoroil (API: SF/CH-4 ) and a gearoil (API GL-4 SAE 80W) should be far beyond of what my B1600 needs. As a motoroil the shop manual for the D950 engine recommends a oil with API CC/CD classification.

I am not sure with the transmission and hydraulic system as I got no information about the specifications for the B1600 and if the oil has this specifications.

But thanks a lot for your comments.

Can anyone remember how much oil goes in the front diff and axel gear cases of a b1600dt. I just drained .5 of a liter but i dont know if thats how much is meant to be in there. The b8200 says it takes 2.0L so I am in two minds about what to do now!
