Home made ballast weight

Thought I’d post a rear ballast I made for my 7060. Added some chain tubes to the inside and filled with gravel till I do a concrete job then I’ll fill it with that.
Weight unknown???

Concrete will cause the steel container to rust out in a few years. Bad idea to use concrete with thin steel barrel.

Ya I’m kinda thinking that it will rust no matter what and if that’s the case I’m still left with a good ballast block.

Joked with my buddy that it was a cooler for the back and I’m building the smoker for the fel.

Its very gratifying to make something usefull and cool.
Weight wise I'd guess 700 lbs.

Well it’s 10 cubic feet of volume and I think cement is around the 150lbs per cubic foot so if it was full of cement it would be around the 1500lbs. Being that I used gravel I have no clue but it feels like more then 700lbs.

Very nice Fab work. The use of some U-channel edge trim, and the chain tubes and your fit and finish are are Great Features. If you do remove the gravel and go with concrete, you could add some Roll on bed liner to help slow any rust issue over time.

I coated the insides with 1.5l of white tremclad but truck bed liner may have been a better option. The most time on this thing was the 3ph bracket so if it ever did rot out and I’m still using gravel those tanks arnt hard to find. I actually have another one kicking around.
I’d also love to get one of those logging 3ph attachments for skidding logs so in the future that may become my rear ballast.

I always get a chuckle out of subjects like this. I was talking to my coworker the other day about tractors and he said his old John Deere will still be running after my Kubota is long dead. That's a debate for another day, but I asked him, "Does it really matter?" He gave me a funny look and I said, "It only has to outlast me as far as I am concerned." So, the real question is, how long will it take to rot out your ballast tank?

Put a rod the right size for your 3pt all the way thru it then concrete, that way if and when the barrel gives up you still have a weight ready to work without missing a beat,
