Does anyone have any advice regarding tooth bars? Specifically I’m looking for a strong one to fit on an MX-5400 that would be good for digging out big brush root wads.

I tell you this ........... I got a ratchet rake on a tractor that I got a hellva deal on - didn't think much of it till I started using it . IT IS not a toothbar, but damn it pulls some weeds and debris up and scratches up the earth. Great for gravel and loose dirt too.
As for the toothbar - I like my piranha toothbar, but you might be better with the type that have the large pointed teeth on them, something like this:

As Hokie pointed out, I would think something like the heavy toothed variety would work better for your application. I got one of these years ago for my BX.
It's been modified to fit my B now, but it sits in the corner of my garage. The piranha bar is the one that I now use more often. If I were doing more "grubbing" work like you described, the ATI bar would be my choice.

I don't have an MX but my ea tooth bar works well. I'm using it to scrape about 4' of clay back into a ditch. With the right moisture it peels the clay back perfect. Plenty of threads with debate in them about various manufacturers. I think any tooth bar will help 1000%. I can also dig to about 2' pretty easily. It's no mini excavator but it's better than a shovel.

I put a Heavy Hitch tooth bar on and it seems to be working real good. In this picture I was removing rocks from an area that the the chief landscaper didn't want them in. I 'm also in the process of filling a sunken garden area with dirt from on the property, so I'm skinning the old sod/weeds off of the top and the tooth bar does that nicely too. The only issue is that I had to tighten the set screws yesterday, after some heavy use, it was starting to slide off.

I have a bolt on EA Wicked toothbar on my MX6000 bucket. It uses all eleven bolt holes that the factory cutting edge uses. No complaints and it's way more capable than the factory cutting edge. I have to be careful when using the bucket near the asphalt driveway since it will tear it up.
I have the piranha tooth bar and love it on my B2601, but it has taken a lot of abuse, its kind of like a timex watch (takes a licking and keeps on ticking)
I'm also using an EA Wicked toothbar (just came in from using it). Like another poster said, any toothbar is a major plus.

I have the Piranah and for pulling our small trees and brush, it rocks. For digging, not so much
I just ordered a Piranah—-The regular bucket on my old L-3800 did a pretty good job of taking out rootwads of heavy brush—-which is the big job that I have, so the Piranah on my new MX-5400 should do an excellent job. I liked the sound of the root digger until I read of all of the expensive repairs to bent cylinders from the root digger bending them due to backward pressure on the buried bucket during forward movement.

I deal mainly with 3-4” diameter brush and field olives. The tooth bar grabs them tight and rips them out of the ground. I keep the height around 6” off the ground. If need be, I circle back and catch it from a different side to rip out the remaining roots. What the tooth bar doesn’t get the brush hood makes short work of it
I bought one of these, took it off and regret the purchase. 84" unit if you are interested. Weld on teeth work great, bolt on tooth bar that hangs below the bucket edge and jambs up with root/brush/grass garbage not so good.
The piranha bar looks better to me.
I'm happier with my root rake grapple and skeleton bucket.

I have one on a BX and it works really well for digging into rooted and rocky soil. I don't have a backhoe but this worked pretty well for me digging into small inclines to level land out.

I had a piranha bar on my previous BX and have the EA wicked toothbar on my B2601. when I was looking at toothbars for the B2601, I was between the two mentioned above and the heavy hitch bar.
I’m a big fan of heavy hitch and have a few of their products, but didn’t like that it essentially used the buckets cutting edge still, where the piranha and EA bars effectively replace them, based on how they are design and installed. Looking at videos with tractor time with Tim and others, there buckets are all rusted to hell because I feel their buckets cutting edge is still doing a fair amount of the work.
The main thing I did like was how easy it was to remove and didn’t require modifications to the bucket, but again felt the other toothbars were better suited to my needs.
