My new to me B7100 is ready for an oil change. The PO had it fully serviced (all oils, filters, etc) by its original dealer at 1080 hours before I bought it. I have the receipt from the service, $582 worth! I am now at 1159. The manual calls for 30 wt or 10w30. The dealer had used 4 qts of 15w40. It has not used any oil over the last 70 hours I have used it. I am from the old school where if it is running well, don't change the type of oil, ie, weight or brand. So I am inclined to go back with 15w40. Any other opinions?

Oils were much different when those recommendations were written. 15W-40 would be just fine. A higher SAE grade oil provides a thicker oil film and resists thinning at higher temperatures better. The only reason they didn't use 40 weights back then is because the couldn't get it to flow well enough at cold.

For the same reason if you use your tractor a lot in the winter you may want to consider a synthetic 5W-40 or multigrade 30 weight (I wouldn't use a straight 30) diesel oil. Though the 30 weight may be a bit thin for hard use in the middle of summer. These things don't have oil coolers ya know.

EDIT: Correction, apparently some do have oil coolers. I know the B7100HST does as I'm look at that parts manual for another post right now.

The nice thing about 15-40 is there is usually a good selection of HD diesel oil everywhere. I like Rotella, but Walmart carries several other options like Delo, FoMoCo, etc for $12-15 or so per gallon. I use it year round in several engines.

Thanks for the advice. I didn't know there was that much difference between oil for diesels and oil for gas engines. I went for the Rotella T 15w40 at TSC.

I tried Rotella T6 (5W40 - full synthetic) but it seemed cause my Kubota to run a little louder so I figured it might be best to give Rotella T5 (10W30 -synthetic blend) a try since my owners manual calls for 10W30. It seems to run a little quieter now and since I change my oil every year probably good enough to use a synthetic blend. I am not a oil expert but I figure its best to follow the owners manual and Rotella T5 has good reviews as well.

FYI make sure you let the oil pan fully drain and wipe the drain nut clean and put clean oil back on the filter gasket or the old oil will mix with the new oil and look old before long.

Just went through all this in another thread. I picked up the Rotella T6 yesterday as I am a firm believer in full synthetics. Will a Fram filter be OK to use?
I would not.......and there is a LOT of discussions out there about FRAM and their filters!

Order a wix, baldwin, or a genuine Kubota off Amazon, or get one from the local dealer.

If you are going to order - do yourself a favor, go ahead and order the package deal, like a 3 pack of filters, and if you have HST - get a couple of those too, true it will be expensive, until you need to change the oil again and reach on the shelf and there is new filter!;):)

I don't know how Fram is now, but back in the 90's when I was in college, I sectioned Fram, Baldwin, and AC Delco. Fram had way less paper in it than the other 2.

A bit dissapointed what has been said about Fram filters as I have used them from Day 2. 38 years later seemingly no problems.
I use a PH2870A.
I do change oil at 15 hours against the recommended 75.
I use 15W-40 various brands
Oils is very black when drained.
If I did not have so many gallons of oil and filters waiting I would use The Synthetic.

David,

gonna tell you the truth - I have been using them for 30 years myself - I too never had a problem, that I know of......

yet looking inside one - it looks like a horror show!

AND other than failing, you would never really know how well it works or is not working, most if not all - have a bypass built in, and if it kicks in, there would be no indication it did!

I tried one time to cut open a amsoil filter about 20 years ago.......it was like cutting into a tank!

I would love if someone did a micro test on all to see who filters the best:D;):)

A stronger can doesn't necessarily make a filter better but when I was searching for mine I learned that some contain some sort of bypass and some don't. Word was if your original Kubota filter contained one you needed to be sure any aftermarket did too. I picked up a Wix and a Purolator because they supposedly do. If a Kubota dealer were nearby I probably would have just dropped by there.
