JMO, the grapple is wider and will push branches back away from handles. I can see the grapple better from the seat than I can see the ends of the forks.
Final answer, I have not damaged the tractor using the grapple and I have damaged the tractor using the forks to remove brush and logs.
Oh ... so a branch caught the locking latch/lever on one side and flipped it up and that's what caused the issue? I don't think you mentioned that in your original post. Now I'm following.

I read the OP to imply that a branch may have caught the locking lever on one side.
