Hello Y’all!
I recently purchased the L4701 not realizing it was underpowered for most balers. Does anyone know if there is a baler, round or square, that this tractor can handle?
Thank you! Eric-Bivins Tx

3ph implements typically list the minimum pto hp needed to operate the implement. You can search using your pto rated hp.

I would think that you'd be able to make any of the small square balers work. You may not be able to run at full capacity but it should work. I've baled with a Farmall H pulling a NH super 78 and that H is only 26 hp IIRC. I would think that the round balers would be OK as long as you stay small ie a 5 X 4 bale. I don't remember them needing much hp. All they do is spin the bale and squeeze the windrows between rollers. If you have hills you will probably have an issue pulling the baler up them whilst baling with either one but you should be OK on flat ground as long as you're OK with slowing down. I saw a guy on YouTube baling squares with a JD 1025R.

I used a Massey 1528 HST (28hp) to run a NH 273 square baler. With the HST it w great setup due to the ability to adjust the ground speed. I tried my NH TL80A (80hp) with a 12 speed and went back to the little tractor to square bale.

I used a Case 8420 round baler. The throat is very narrow and string tie only. The MF would not spin it correctly. I had to use the NH for it. However I must add that I did not like this baler. But it made nice little bales at about 400 pounds.

If your are looking for a round baler for the L4701 I would check out a Hesston 5530, 530, 730, or Massey Ferguson 1734, or Case 8420. They are all the same baler. I have a Hesston 730 and the 4701 Handles it just fine. Biggest drawback is they are twine only and the twine arm and cutter can be problematic. They also do not have a bale monitor so you can make some odd shaped bales of your not paying attention.
