I picked up another plastic drum for fuel storage. It was used for olive oil and was drained but not washed out. Rather than fiddle with water or solvents I decided to remove as much of the olive oil as possible. The drum sat in my one shed for a couple weeks, so nearly all the residual oil was in the bottom around the outside of the drum. I thought it would be fine if there was a way to wipe it real well with a rag. Poking around the shed I found a piece of plastic pipe, rags and a spool of string trimmer line.

The string trimmer line was fed down through the pipe double and what came out the other end became a snare to grab the rags. Changing the rags was as easy. Just a matter of letting some slack in the line from the other end. It took only a couple minutes and 3 or 4 clean rags to mop it dry. I'm not concerned about any small amount of film the olive oil may have left behind.

Ingenious !

And so what if there's a dribble of olive oil in there.

You can brag to your buddies that you "make biodiesel"

;-)

I am trying to figure out what the Amish have to do with your innovation!

Maybe because it does not use air filled tires? OR electricity...

Edit: we do not have Amish locally, but do not too far away, maybe an hour or so. Do they actually make their own Q tips? Inquiring mind wants to know...:)

My neighbors are Amish.....good folks....they buy Q tips like you and me. They also have the best guns in the woods, and are great neighbors that actually have respect for others around them.

I get it living close enough to OP. Henro; it's about being frugal and totally a compliment in my book. Love it!

Not meant as a slam toward the Amish. When some people see I live in Lancaster County PA, they assume I may have an Amish connection. The "chim" comes from the local pronunciation of Jim :) Been using it on different boards for years.

Actually, my Stepdad did make his own Q-tips when I was a kid. We always had a bulk package of cotton in the medicine chest. If I recall correctly it came in a small cardboard box and was rolled inside blue paper. He had ear problems and he'd twirl a flat sided toothpick in cotton to apply whatever the medication was. He wasn't Amish though.

Are you the Chim I remember from years ago at TBN?

Always figured it to be so, but never thought to ask...

That would be me. Still frequent TBN and Rimfirecentral. Years ago there was a great board called Shooterstalk that went away and I miss it. Been on a few others but in recent years it's been mostly here, TBN and RFC.

In the avatar you had with you wearing the big hat, you look a lot like a guy I worked with.

PS: Back around '78 I worked near Zelie for several weeks.
