Fair enough, but one cannot ignore the huge amount of radioactive dust generated by a ground strike and the long term effects it can have on people. AND there also might be a huge number of casualties resulting from a ground strike.

An EMP detonation 1000 miles up it seems would produce very little physical damage to the surface under it. Actually, 1000 miles up seems pretty high. Was that even a reasonable estimate of the height at which an EMP attack would occur? My guess would have been a few hundred miles max, and maybe lower...

I have no way personally to compare the two. Just thinking out loud really.

Yes, but what is the purpose a nuclear attack? It isnt to just blow stuff up. It is about command and control. From a strategic standpoint it is far more advantageous to disable all electronics/communications in a 2000 mile radius than to blow up 5 miles. It not about killing the most people, its about removing the ability to fight back, taking over key infrastructure.

Everything electronic or that carries a current of any kind. AC, DC, we are talking electricity generation. It doesnt have to have a current going through it either. It can be idle. Although

Pretty much every vehicle, house, commercial building in the US. All internet, all generators, all batteries. Harder to predict with smaller electronic devices like phones or watches..but with no power and no cell towers in operation phones are useless anyway.

looks like they refer to a height of 250 miles.

Being that the article was written almost 20 years ago, I would assume that as far as the military goes, they would have learned ways to protect their assets in the meantime. Rest of us…unlikely I fear.
