We had a major windstorm a couple of days go which took down a tree and broke the top off another. In addition, the poorly constructed "barn" that came with the property decided it'd had enough and now it's a chicken coop at best. My Jeep was parked inside on one end but thankfully it didn't get damaged.

I called the insurance company and they've started the claim process. My deductible is $2,100 but I think it'll cost a whole lot more to replace this structure with a similar but properly built 15'x40' barn.

As we say down south "Daaayyyyyummmm!"

With current prices on materials ........... you ought to be able to build a very "nice" structure!

Let us know what the ins. company thinks it is worth!

I would recommend considering a metal building kit. They are pretty wind-firm. My barn is made of welded steel tubing with steel sheeting attached to steel purlins. It has withstood 70 mph winds without any damage at all.

I'm thinking $10K at least to replace the structure but I'm supposed to hear back from an adjuster within a week. There's no one in my area to come out and do the estimate so I'm not sure how they plan to assess the cost of replacement.

We had 90mph winds out here but I agree re a steel structure. I was a welder for many years so I'd like to replace the building myself but do it properly and double the size. I'll have a better idea of what I'm going to do once I know how much I have to play with.

My building was custom built by a welder. No bolts in trusses or any other part of the frame structure. It never creaks or moves at all, no matter how high the winds.

I'd love to have a barn like that. Do you have any photos of the internal structure that you could share? As long as I have at least 8 ft clearance from floor to the bottom of the trusses for a cabbed tractor I'm good.

I can take some photos Saturday. I’m traveling. The wall height on min is 10’. You won’t regret building the extra height.

That would be very much appreciated and I agree that 10' would be a good height from the floor to the underside of the trusses.

Absolutely! It's a 5 cu.ft. rated Canoga with a 10hp Honda engine and it was a deal at $950 from someone selling it on Craigslist a few years ago. I've used it on various projects around my property.

Will your new building have a bathroom right in the center? 💩
It's a new toilet that I bought for $5 at a local auction. 😂

Not sure how things work where you live, but here in New Jersey, unless you get a public adjuster, you will get ripped off. The insurance company isn’t working for you, they are working for themselves and trying to pay out as little as possible. I’ve have severe wind damage three times. And hired a public adjuster for them all. Even with the money they charge. You still make out way better. Just my 2¢ Best of luck

Very good point there. I had a thread going about helping a friend move hay bales and he had a new metal sided shed put up so I have some idea of what it costs. If they try to low ball me I'll get quotes from local contractors.

OP is in Montana. 70mph is nothing. The Vult is 173mph up in the CO mountains where I am, Montana is surely over 100 mph for building code.

I am confident that mine would also survive those conditions. He welded frame never creaks or moves.
