I have an opportunity to purchase a B2910 "as is" for a very low price. According to the party the driver hit a deep hole, wrenching the tractor and afterwards would not hold hydraulic (or transmission) fluid. they needed a new tractor anyway so they parked this a year ago. there would be an investment of time and getting a trailer to retrieve, then a cost to have diagnosed at a shop...or ask you experienced folks if it's a easy thumbs-up yes, go get it. or run, don't walk away and let it be someone else's experiment. i have pics of the underside covered in fluid and dirt. It supposedly runs but they think the starter froze...Thanks for your thoughtful consideration!

Be cautious. If it leaked a lot of fluid and ran low, serious stuff could be seized and it is not the starter but something in the transmission or hydraulic pump. The poor starter does not have the oomph to turn the engine with these seized parts.

You have to decide what your time is worth cleaning the tractor in order to see where the oil is coming from. There is a lot of fragile stuff on the underside from filters and filter housings, hydraulic tubing.

Good luck.

The expression "Run, Forest, Run" comes to mind, but that's just me.

The " they think the starter froze " part raises a flag for me more than the "hit a hole" part.

For me, it would have to be "pennies on the dollar" cheap, rather than "just a good deal" (if that makes sense)

My spider senses are tingling telling me you're just inheriting (buying) a bunch of parts.

Again, just me. What do I know? LOL

Good luck

Unless you want a potentially really expensive project this might be a really good one to walk away from. You could try turning the engine over with a wrench on the end of the crankshaft to see if it will turn over at all - engine or transmission not seized. If it's seized a new starter won't improve things.

I have a B2910. Hard to imagine hitting a hole that would twist things that bad. I think there is more to the story. Likely they ripped off a hydraulic line/or filter somehow and ran the tractor dry.

No Idea what the cost in parts and your free labor might end up being, if you were to restore it to operating condition.

How much energy, money and time do you have to donate to the cause?

In my case I would pass, but MIGHT buy it as a parts tractor if it was cheap enough, since I already have one that I like a lot.

Thanks guys, this is exactly what i thought i would learn from the forum. the front tires are trashed as they had to drag it at some point, my contact said he wasn't sure why the workers did that. sounds like it did seize although my contact said the motor was running.
Yes, the deal is such that worst case parting it out or as a parts source for a stripped tractor would still have me ahead. I'll let you know what we end up doing.

that thing has been leaking fluid(s) for a good while based on the pics.

If you don't know what to look at, or to look for, I'd pass on it. Without some sort of knowledge, you are buying blind. THAT--can get you in trouble.

With that said, if it's cheap enough, you might be able to recover your $$$$ by selling the parts off of it assuming the parts are any good. So you can't get the engine started, assume the engine is no good. Without being able to get the engine started you can't test the transmission, assume it's trashed too. That leaves you with a front axle, tires/wheels, body parts, etc. Maybe $1000 worth of stuff to the right buyer.

I have been down this road in the past. You can use things to your advantage, or you can walk away and avoid the headaches. Just recently I found an ad for an engine that I wanted, so I called the guy and he said he pulled it to fix an oil leak and just put another engine in instead. Red flag. There was a reason he just got another engine. You don't pull an engine to pull a valve cover. So I get there and the intake is off, it's been sitting outside for who knows how long, rusty intake valves and seats, pan full of water, I told him "sir with all due respect, there is more damage here than the engine is worth running". Guy says make me an offer. I offered him $9.50 scrap price and he took it.

This might be good project for a guy with some mechanical ability and wanting a project. When you mention having it diagnosed at a shop? BIG red flag. That could wind up being a very expensive tractor.
It would have to be about free for me to consider it and I would do the work myself.
