Been trying to compare this tractor to other brands while trying to make a purchase decision (already ordered the L4060 HSTC). At first I thought vs the JD 3 series, but other than HP, the JD is less of a tractor. So for future reference for others, what compares?

Back in 2001-2002 when I was tractor shopping it was a lot easier as JD and Kubota had similar models to each other and could actually do a 1:1 comparison. Back then it really came down to price and Kubota won. Best buying decision I made, 20 years later and it has been the most reliable piece of equipment I ever had.

When I compared it to the 3046R vs L4060HSTC, HP was slightly higher on the JD, but the L4060 has higher lift on loader and 3pt. Also the loader on the 3046 is NOT detachable. Ground clearance is higher on the L4060, Wheel base longer, and weighs more, all of which are better for what my planned use is, mowing and baling.
Jump up to the 4 series and still the L4060 beats those numbers, which means 5 series.

See my confusion? No Direct comparisons! What are your thoughts on this?

My guess is the the 4044R would compare the closest to the Grand L 4060.

If thats the case then the L4060 is the better tractor. Heavier, more ground clearance, longer, and $2000 lower in price. Only thing the JD has is slightly more HP.

Personally I would take weight, ground clearance and wheelbase over a couple more horses in the engine. At that level you would notice the former three much more than the HP.

Agreed. I seriously considered the 1800M series during my last purchase. They are very nice tractors.

I've always liked Massey's. That's what I originally wanted, but no local dealers.

But then once I bought my Kubota and got to know my dealer, I'm happy with orange.

Agreed and is exactly what I am doing too!

Considering I ran my NH 273 baler yesterday with my B2410, HP wont be the issue, but the weight and ground clearance will be. That baler really moved the little tractor around. I would not have been surprised if I put it in neutral and watched it walk down the field on it's own.

I'm surprised that the loader on a 3046R is not detachable?

I have a L2501 and Deere 3520 (predecessor of 3039R). Besides the 3520's additional 11hp it's just a more deluxe tractor than an L01, with e-hydro, nicer seat, rubber floor mat and loader handle, instruments, load match, etc. But comparing a 3046R with a grand L 4060, the Deere 3046R is in between that and an L3901 IMO.

I haven't seen the loader in person, so I called to find out. If you look at the pictures of the loader, it looks like everything is pinned in place and doesn't come off. They told me that the entire loader comes off now, including the frame. There are two latches inside the frame where the loader attaches to the tractor that drops a lower section to the ground, then the entire unit tilts forward and comes off the tractor.

On the Kubota the frame is still attached and the loader connects to the frame, so it would appear in all the pictures that the loader is fixed on the 3046R. When it comes off, there are just two pivot points that attach to the tractors frame, everything else of the loader comes completely off. Thats why I thought the loader was fixed, because the pictures of it make it look like it is permanently attached.

What threw me off on the compare was the horsepower. I was comparing HP to HP, but after reviewing the 4 series found out that only the HP on the JD was greater, the Kubota beat the JD on everything else that was important. HP is nice, but ground clearance, weight, lift capacity, and length matter more in the long run. Only takes 17 HP to run a baler. Takes a heavy stable tractor to operate it though.

The JD and Kubota models are interleved. Sometimes the JD is better and sometimes the Kubota is. It kind of depends on which models you want to compare who wins.

But, I don’t think that JD has a real competitor to a Grand L. If you hate the Kubota HST, pedal I guess that’s a viable reason to buy a JD.

I wouldn’t personally consider anything but a Kubota. It’s easy to resell if needed, and they are solid tractors. The other brands can be ok if you never need to resell or trade. Otherwise, you lose a lot of money generally speaking.

I don’t think I’m the only one who’s been asked when are you buying your Kubota after buying a property with a little acreage. During that time, nobody ever asked me when I was going to buy my JD.

YMMV.

Btw, Neil Messicks has a lot of videos comparing tractors to Kubotas … well worth watching.

Yes he does, but not a L4060 to a JD. I searched all over for one. I finally just started looking at all the JD models before finding the closest match.

Well, I thought I was getting an L4060 HSTC-LE. Turns out they sold it 2 months ago but never removed it from inventory. I had just found LED lights for the LE too that are a direct plug and play.

Back to waiting. At least now I have two options, whichever comes in first.

I love my new L3560 LE. I thought about the L4060 LE but the $2K I saved on the tractor helped me when it came time to buy the implements I needed. I don't think there's much, if anything, that I need to do with my L3560 that an L4060 would have done better, and the L3560 was in stock and available and the L4060 wasn't.

I need the weight and PTO HP, and is a bit borderline on what I plan to use it for, but fits the budget. Only accessory I need are pallet forks, have pretty much everything else since I have a B2410 doing a lot. The tiller will work a LOT better on the L4060, thats a given. Running a baler and MoCo are the primary uses for the L4060. If I'm going to spend the money, might as well get a cab too, and enjoy it.
