so i took my tractor for a 1/2 hour drive the other day to pick something up and noticed and squealing noise begin from the mid area of the tractor . after pulling over i checked underneath and the driveshaft coming from what im assuming is the transfer case is extremely hot to the touch. im guessing this is where the noise is coming from. is there a coupling inside the shaft? does anyone have any insight on this. thanks

a squeal is a bearing that has gone bad - or two pieces of metal that are in constant contact.

the lever was in the 2wd position. i was a bit confused as to the hot shaft ( not hot right at the transfer case but 4 inches forward along the shaft) as i dont see how it could be turning if in 2wd. it there any way to take the shaft off easily to inspect ?
When in 2WD, the shaft is turned by the front wheels.
I have attached the 2 WSM pages dealing with removing the front drive shaft.

awesome thanks. i will order a wsm for myself as i feel it will come in handy. am i able to remove the drive shaft and still drive the tractor in order to see if the squealing still happens? or will the transmission fluid and front diff fluid leak out?
Sorry I do not know and the illustrations are not clear enough to see what the seal mates with.
I expect it will become clear as you remove the drive shaft.

No oil should leak out.
Does it only squeal when the tractor is moving? If so, see if the shield is rubbing the propeller shaft due to being bent or broken.
I find a lot of units that customers bring in with a squealing noise to be caused by a hydraulic remote valve sticking or the three-point feedback linkage being out of adjustment. The three-point can be checked by lowing it, then raising it while listening to the engine. If the engine tone changes as the three-point arms reach the top, the feedback linkage is out of adjustment.
