Cool PTO spline cover

I like making useful things out of junk so never throw anything out which might be useful someday.
I was looking around for some suitable pipe and spied this single malt Scotch container which came in a 3 pack.
I don't know where the Scotch went.
I just cut it shorter, put a magnet on the end and done.

I put 2 on my dump trailer to hold the OTHER hooks, when tightening the chain binders and rachet straps.

Lol...I just bought two of the OEM ones yesterday at Ginop Sales in Williamsburg, MI. $9 apiece.

Great idea. I use a piece of that grey pipe insulation and slide it over the splines on mine. A couple of wraps with electrical tape helps it stay tight, plus keeps it from splitting down the seam over time.

I owned my BX22 for 15 or 16 years, and never covered the PTO spline shaft with anything other than a sparse wipe of grease. I don't think that I ever used the rear one, but the front one was used ever winter for that time, and I never had a problem. Some people look for a problem where there is none. Covering it will hold the moisture in, and that will be a lot worse than some grease on it, that you can wipe away. I use the KISS method most of the time.

It's true I'm guilty of building unnecessary parts just for the fun of it but consider the following:

If you don't grease your PTO output splines they will look like this after 45 years.

Not a huge problem but it does make attaching the PTO drive more of an argument than a nice sliding snick home.

If you do grease the splines, you need to keep dirt and sand away from the grease or it will turn into grinding compound which brings its own problems.

I won't be here in 45 years and I seriously doubt my son will care what the PTO looks like at that time However, I'm not opposed to buying a 3 pack and copying that cover design.

My L2501 came with a rubber cover. I have no idea how much they cost, but that would be an option as well.

I imagine a trailer hitch ball cover would work if you glued a magnet inside.
But the 1 1/2" covers just may be tight enough.
Or you can get some shrink tubing to tighten it up.

The Fergusons & 8N fords had a steel cup that went over the PTO shaft Yesrerdays tractor sells them { look up ferguson TO20 PTO parts $ 8.70 )
