I was a kid in the mid 50s & early 60s. Dad never had a spout at home like the gas station did, but he always had an old worn out can opener in his tool box to open the oil cans at home along with a funnel. When I was about 15 got my first job at a gas station. I bought my dad a real spout. His "work truck" used so much oil he bought reclaimed/filtered oil to keep it on the road. Memories...

Let's see, I have a glass quart jar with a screw-on metal spout and metal cap, the pointy push-in thing shown above, and the new improved plastic spout that snaps onto a cardboard can....like a oil can museum display.

I still have one of these…. I used it for years to add oil from metal cans to early-vintage Rolls Royce/Bristol-Siddeley jet engines…. before I “liberated” it and brought it home.

Thanks for posting! Growing up my Dad owned a gas station. You might remember the days that we would pump the gas, clean the windshield, check the oil (and use the spout if needed) plus check the tire pressure if asked. All that for 30 cents a gallon! Brought back a lot of memories for me

Local Payless station had a rack of those on glass bottles containing used "reclaimed" engine oil at .10/quart.

Reminds me of my days as a "refueling technician" while in undergrad.

I worked at a full service Standard station where we washed EVERY window, checked the tire pressure, water, oil, etc., for a $1.00 gasoline purchase.

I have both, laying right next to my two old-school steel band strap wrenches (two different sizes). Was a lot easier with the orange one on my old VW because the can on the other style wouldn't let me get the spout in the fill tube without spilling some. The orange one with the bowl was a lot better for the paper sided 'cans' too. Still use it for the mowers because it's still a pretty good funnel. The plastic bottles fit nicely in the center tube and drain very well if you leave them a few minutes.

I was in a antique store some time back and seen old oil cans for sale ten bucks apiece. Empty of course. If I only knew. Threw them away for nuttin.
I like the plastic bottles better. You can seal up a half empty bottle by just screwin the cap back on. Try that with a can.

I did immediately recognize the item in the first post though!

We used the glass quarts with the tin spouts on the farm for tractors. I used to add motor oil to the old ‘Moline that way.

I don’t recall if we got it in a 55 gallon barrel or 5 gallon pails

I'm 66 and a few years ago we finally used the last of my Dads 30W non-detergent Castrol oil changing out the 2N. It was in metal cans and he had gotten cases of it from the Travis BX a long time ago. Never occurred to me that the cans might be collectable.
